Rally

Postby freecatsrus » Thu Jan 03, 2008 12:23 pm

Yes it is that time of the year again for the Lisbon / Dakaar rally, where has the last year gone :?

The rally will be heading towards Malaga on the 6th Jan and we will be stationed on the bridge at the Repsol garage near the Antequera turn off, not sure of the time they will coming through so if anyone can help us out with the time it would be handy, saves getting there too early.

If anyone else is going to be there introduce yourself.

Pat and John a question for you, will you be there again this year? if so looking forward to seeing you again.

YIPPEEEEEEEEEEE

I am going. Will be in the centre though. May go up to the Repsol Garage first.

Did many stop off their last year? Do you watch the Eurosport reviews each night on TV, they are really good.

Carlos Sainz my favorite, Marc Coma on Bikes.

Dont know if you heard about one of the other bike riders Estevez. He had an accident earlier this year and is now in a wheelchair, so sad.

We are off to Morocco for a normal Atlas - Sahara tour, but will catch them at the Er Rachidia - Ouarzazate bivi and stage. Saw it there last year [I think it is passing that way again].....Fantastic, even if you are not a fan!

Hi Deborah, some pics for you, the first one is obviously Carlos which we took and was published in the CDSN.

It was bvusy and there was a tv crew there waiting to interview Carlos, so it is worth while being there.

Liz, they all come up the highway from Portugal, almost past your front door, on Sunday and just about every bridge is packed with watchers.

It seems to be clear. Sad but true that 2008 rally is cancelled:

After different exchanges with the French government - in particular the Ministry for Foreign Affairs - , and based on their firm recommendations, the organisers of the Dakar have taken the decision to cancel the 2008 edition of the rally, scheduled from the 5th to the 20th of January between Lisbon and Senegal’s capital.

Based on the current international political tension and the murder of four French tourists last 24th of December linked to a branch of Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb, but also and mainly the direct threats launched directly against the race by terrorist organisations, no other decision but the cancellation of the sporting event could be taken by A.S.O.

A.S.O.’s first responsibility is to guarantee the safety of all: that of the populations in the countries visited, of the amateur and professional competitors, of the technical assistance personnel, of the journalists, partners and rally collaborators. A.S.O. therefore reaffirms that the choice of security is not, has never been and will never be a subject of compromise at the heart of the Dakar rally.

A.S.O. condemns the terrorist menace that annihilates a year of hard work, engagement and passion for all the participants and the different actors of the world’s biggest off-road rally. Aware of the huge frustration, especially in Portugal, Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal, and beyond the general disappointment and the huge economical consequences in terms of direct and indirect repercussions for the countries visited, A.S.O. will continue to defend the major values of great sporting events and will carry on its engagement for a durable development through the Actions Dakar, started 5 years ago in sub-Saharan Africa with SOS Sahel International.

The Dakar is a symbol and nothing can destroy symbols. The cancellation of the 2008 edition does not endanger the future of the Dakar. To offer, for 2009 a new adventure to all the off-road rally passionate is a challenge that A.S.O. will take on in the months to come, faithful to its engagement and its passion for sports.

Well today we popped over to Portugal for lunch and saw a few Dakar trucks and 4x4s coming the other way on the highway in Spain and Portugal. I think we also saw a load of service trucks/vans going home, wherever home was. Even coming home after dark we passed a big Dakar truck just before we turned off. Dont know if some are just going home or doing the route to Malaga before going home or even going alone. For sure there were a few who came from Lisboa to the Algarve and headed East today/tonight.

I read that the Repsol KTM team were travelling back to Barcelona by air.

And that the humanitarian aid and medical supplies and equiptment that Repsol always donates to the villages in Africa is still going to be taken over. Didnt say when or how.

What a shame, sad state of affairs that it comes to this. I blame the politicians, all of them, that the world is in such a mess.
