Daveee, A certificate of conformity (COC) is available from the manufacturer of the vehicle. Only possible to get if the car is made in europe. You will need this to re-register your car.

The vehicle manufacturers are the only people who can supply a COC.
Dealerships can help but they come from the manufacturers. Most ask for proof of ownership.

I brought over a new LHD car on UK plates three years ago.

The garage I bought it from in UK provided me with a Certificate of Conformity but I was never asked to produce it when re-registering the vehicle onto Spanish plates, presumably because it had been registered previously in the UK and would have had to meet European requirements in that event!

I used a Gestor to do the necessary paperwork. I had to take the car to the ITV (testing station) in Malaga for it to be checked over prior to registration. All quite painless except for the cost which was around €1.000 as I recall. The cost relates to the size of vehicle, it was a large 4x4.

hi metalmonkey
what does that cost break down to ? does it depend on the value of the car
or engine size, or is it a standard charge.

Davee, It depends on several things

Engine size

fuel type

over 2000cc or not

make and model

age of vehicle.

cost new of vehicle

For example a range rover year 2007 v8 petrol would be very expensive

Engine size is no longer relevant. The CO2 emissions figure is what counts.

A petrol V8 Landrover would now incur a registration tax of 14.75% rather than the old 12% rate.

Cars with less than 120 gm CO2 now pay no tax. In between there are new rates of 4.75% and 9.75% for emissions of 120 - 160 and 160 - 200

The way I read it, it has to be under 120gm.

But this is Spain - they might read it differently so I guess you will only find out when you register it. :(

thanks sid
also what is the tax based on, eg. is it the cost of the car when new, or
the average cost at present.

It is based on the new cost (at the time it was built) less a depreciation factor.

For instance a 3 year old car is worth 56% of its new cost.

The tax office have a set of car values and depreciation percentages.

That said, sometimes the tax seems to work our less than expected, usually when a good gestor is involved!!

hi sid
re co2 emmision, just been looking on some different car specs and it looks like 120gm is the lowest you can get, even a 1.1 fiat panda is 135gm
so i should be ok..
