Importing a 1991 BMW convertible.....

Postby scotty » Fri Apr 24, 2009 6:42 pm

Am I insane to even consider it ? Its a LHD currently on UK plates and has 80,000 miles. What would be import duty roughly ? The only reason I would consder it is that I have an E30 convertible here in Ireland and love it to bits.... so it would be nice to have a "classic" in the sun as well.

All comments welcome please. 8) 8)

Hi scotty,
Take the info to your friendly Gestor and he will be able to give you a price. Its got a good few years on it, so the "scaled" tax will be low, there is a previous post listing the rates, but alas I'm having an off day and haven't found it yet .

Not so bad day after all...found it

thats the old way.

that would of been right enrique - take the original "book price" (their spanish book - our cherokee 42k!) apply the multiplyer as in the above table depending on the age of the vehicle and take a % of that depending on engine size - 0-1600cc was 7%, 1600+ was 12%.

ie our jeep - (10% (its a 92) of 42,000) is 4200, and then 12% of that (its a 4L) is 304 euros. bargin.

theres a new system now ;)

The system is still much the same - all that has changed is that it is now based on CO2 emissions.

CO2 emission of less than 120g/Km = 0% of the vehicle value

CO2 emission of between 120-160 g/Km = 4.75% of the vehicle value

CO2 emission of between 160-200g/Km = 9.75% of the vehicle value

CO2 emission of more than 200g/Km = 14.75% of the vehicle value

With a car that old it may be difficult to establish the emission figure but even if you take the worse case, 14.75% of 10% of the value (max 20k) you end up with a pretty small figure for the tax - less than €300.

Excellent information guys, thank you. It gets better. The vendor sent me an email dropping the price to £1000 sterling. Its a 325i convertible in lhd and only 80k miles on it :D . This is looking like a good deal. Keep the comments coming please.

Further to my last post, a 1991 325i cabrio is valued at 21100 on the official list so the tax will be based on 10% of that figure. Sometimes a good gestor can negotiate an even lower value.

Since it will be impossible to get the emission data for such an old car, I assume that, as in the UK, they will use the old calculation based on engine size, so it will be 12%.

I make that €253 or less.

Nice car for a grand!

Thanks Cid. i really appreciate the input. It is a lovely car for the money, thats why I'm interested. Even if it lasts (engine wise) 18 months then I will have had my moneys worth. My E30 in Ireland has only 27,000 miles on it. Its a real garage queen and only gets out on dry sunny days (yesterday  ).
I like the idea of tipping down to the shops in an E30........ and maybe joining a marbella based classic car club. (Mid life crisis & living the dream).

Hi scotty,
Its only done 80,000 miles ,for a BMW that's just run in 8)
I would expect 150-200k miles before you need to do anything , epecially if its had full BMW service history.
The headlights are they Ireland spec :?: will need to change if they are, although some models can be changed within the units. 8)

Is there a list for tax on bikes anybody. I'm being quoted over 900€ to get a 1992 BMW registered over here and I'd like to know how much of that is tax.

They seem to base the value purely on the engine size.

These are the values and I assume the depreciation tables apply so you would just take 10% of the value below.

As with cars, the tax is emission based but with an old bike I assume it will be 14.75% at worst.

One point. Make sure it's got its original wheel/tyre sizes and not larger alloys or something. They are very keen on this when testing.
