Motorbike tax

Postby blondie » Wed May 13, 2009 10:42 am

Hi all

I have just received a notification for the motorbike tax to be paid. Unfortunately I no longer own the bike, sold it a few months back. The sale contract stated that the buyer would undertake all ownership changes, and the buyer even came back to us to ask for a copy of our NIE so that they could do the change. Somehow we are still showing as the owners and we have to pay the road tax apparently.

Who can I contact to show that we no longer own the bike?

Cheers
Blondie

There have been a few threads about ownership issues before that might help.
Were you the owner on 1st Jan this year or did you sell it in 2008?

We sold it this year. Does that make a difference?

I believe that whoever is the registered owner on Jan 1st cops for the vehicle tax for the year.

Yes, same rules as for IBI. Even if you sell on the 2nd January you are responsible for the payment for the whole year.

Ok, and how can I check if it has been changed and how can I get a refund on that afterwards?

I have been told(don´t know how true this is) that if the vehicle still hasnt changed hands, and there is an accident, we would be held responsible- is that true?

Bearing in mind we have a sale contract.

If the vehicle IS still in your name, yes, you would be held responsible for any traffic infractions etc.
Can you not get in contact with whoever bought it from you? You really need to go with them to a gestor to get the paperwork sorted. You would need to seek the "refund" of the road tax from them direct anyway. If you've paid it.

You could try going to trafico and giving it the baja.

Slight thread drift here 8) but it appears that the spanish system needs a total review in vehicle registrations. In Ireland (& I think UK) we post the log book to licensing people with a simple form and away we go  . I'm surprised the spanish system has not changed since 1900 :D .

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER rely on the new owner of a vehicle to do the transfer. Always meet the prospective purchaser at a company that does transfers i.e. Axa insurance or a company that specialises in this, there are loads of them.
