Re: Buying a Used Car
Reasonably priced could mean anything. What's your budget?
Apart from premium makes, automatics are comparatively rare in Spain, especially if it is a few years old.

Don't buy a used car, you will regret it, and where is CDS?

Why, what is wrong with buying a used car?ajtg1952 wrote:Don't buy a used car, you will regret it,
I have been buying and using, used cars for the last 50 years. Partly because I couldn't afford to buy a new one.
Once I had enough money to buy a new car and I regretted it mainly because it stared to rust away after it was one year old and out of warranty.
My wife's previous car was bought here for 2000 Euro 8 years ago, we used it for 140K klms, extremely reliable, only exchanged it because the body work was getting very tatty. The engine is now in someone else car.

Ajtg1952 - CDS = Costa Del Sol
I've got an inferiority complex, but it's not a very good one!
Re: Buying a Used Car
I do understand why people regret buying second hand in Spain and its such a huge risk.
It seems that cars have a much harder life down here plus they seem to be almost twice as much than in the UK.
BUT new cars are simply too expensive. a passable family ford opel citroen etc is going to cost more that €20k €25k with auto box.
this is a lot of money for something that will be keyed, destroyed and cooked in the sun.
Not everyone on the costa are millionaires and rich pensioners. Some of us are working and bringing up a family.

Re: Buying a Used Car
My experience is possibly not typical.
7 years ago my wife wanted to buy a new Kia Sportage 4x4 diesel at €25,000.
I said that was too much so we bought a whole series of second hand cars, everyone with serious problems despite getting them checked by a mechanic before buying.
We have now spent €34,000 on cars and repairs. Have a 7 year old XTrail with electrical problems that defy belief. If I had gone with my wife we would still have €9,000 in the bank and the car would just be coming out of warranty.
So I still say, don't buy a used car.

Re: Buying a Used Car
Not all. Look at the new Seat Toledo. It's a good sized car with a huge boot. You can get a diesel automatic for well under €20k as they have loads of offers as they are desperate to sell cars. Finance can be really low at about €60 a week.Acen wrote:

Do not buy a diesel auto Ford Focus. They have a little known but very expensive penchance for gearboxes.
Re: Buying a Used Car
thanks for the advice, please do keep it coming.
I would not get it on finance. I would struggle to get finance in spain anyway.

It is a good buy. I'm thinking of buying it myself. I hope it's still for sale when I arrive next week.

Re: Buying a Used Car
Weighing up the pro's and con's of buy in spain or bring from UK I'm opting to buy in Spain. I may have mis-understood but thought I read that to buy in Spain you had to own property in Spain. My plans are to rent for at least the first months however I would want to buy a car almost as soon as I arrived. Where do I stand? My plans for the first couple of years are to do 6 months only per year in Spain and the Spain veh. will stay in Spain.
Re: Buying a Used Car
My understanding, and in my experience, you either have to own a property in Spain or have a rental agreement/contract for a property in Spain.
This was true when I bought my first car here in Spain from a dealer.
All my other cars have been bought privately and no proof of living here was required.
To get the ownership registered in my name just needed my NIE number and an up to date padron certificate.
Cheers

Re: Buying a Used Car
The Padron certificate seems to be the key, depending on where you are.
You can sign on the Padron even if you are renting, but officially you can only do so if you are a permanent resident in Spain.

Re: Buying a Used Car
I needed copies of the padron, NIE and needed to have filed the module 030 with the tax office before we bought new 6 months ago

Re: Buying a Used Car
Okay, been googling what the Padron is so a little wiser. Question. One of the options I have is to buy a Spanish registered and plated veh for sale in UK which there are surprisingly quite a number. Are there any pitfalls with this idea?
