Where did you send your UK licence off to?
When I exchanged my UK licence for a Spanish one I handed in my UK licence at Traffico and was immediately issued with a temporary, fully legal, Spanish licence until my official licence arrived about 4 weeks later.

So Gerry, as usual, it changes from place to place. I got issued with a piece of paper which only entitled me to drive in Spain. A previous poster said they just had the receipts. It does seem to differ, I can only talk of my own experience.
I sent my license through a gestor but it took ages. I am a distance from trafico in Malaga so didn't fancy the drive there! I had no fines or convictions or anything on my UK one, a really clean license so it was just one of those things, I guess.

Don't forget that once you have a Spanish licence (and with it residence, of course) you can't legally drive a UK registered car that you own in Spain.

I'm pretty sure that a good gestor should be able to get a tempory licence direct from traffico, via email, while you go and have a cup of coffee.
Last time my wife changed her car the gestor got an official document to say thre transfer of ownership process was started direct from traffico, via email, within minutes.
Some gestors might wait, days or weeks, until they have a few things to deal with at traffico and then wait again before collecting them.

I got a piece of paper from the gestor but it only entitled me to drive in Spain (ie signifucantly for me, not Gibraltar). From memory I applied in the February and I called DVLC from time to time and they were informed by Trafico that I was changing my license in August and then my Spanish one made its way to me.
I maybe just hit a backlog or a logjam or something forestry related and other people do seem to get theirs faster. The point I was really making was getting the notorised copy as a fall back.

Gerryh

I am going to book an appointment to change my UK to a Spanish driving license. What paperwork do I require exactly? Do I need a medical as some people suggest you do not. I will be going to the Jaen office.

Regards

Barry

I the Jaen Traffico website is similar to the Malaga Traffico website you should find a list of the required paperwork on there.
BUT different offices and different officials interpret the rules differently.
The need for a medical being a classic case where sometimes they ask for it and sometimes they don't.
When we exchanged our licences I took the required photos with my digital camera and printed them out via my computer to my ink jet computer. The official refused them as they had been printed via a computer.
He told me to go to the local photo place and get them done there.
So they took our photos with their digital camera and printed them via their computer onto their ink jet printer.
The official happily accepted them even the the quality was inferior to the ones I supplied.

Thank you gerryh for that.
I have located the Jaen website and electronic interview booking site - Jaen appear to insist on a medical.

Crazy about your phot pics, but par fro the course I guess.

Can anyone suggest where I might get a medical for my license renewal?
I live near Alcalá La Real, Jaen.

They don't just do the medical: they will take your photo, check your details, do one or more simple co-ordination or reaction tests, then to the doctor for blood pressure, sight and hearing plus a general health check then digitally send the file to dgt. A couple of weeks later you are sent the new licence in the post.
I did mine on Friday and the only extra is that I have to get a letter from my GP to say my diabetes is well controlled, this being a requirement for insulin-dependent diabetics.
A plus point for me is that the fee is lower now I am past "a certain age" lol.
Great service, and in my view should be introduced in the UK.

Thanks for that information Peter, I didn't realise that at all.

So they will do all of that and sort out the application for the license? That's good news.
Out of interest, what sort of charge do they make?

The above info does of course only apply to renewals of Spanish licences, not for exchanging from e.g. a UK one.
I shoukd also point out that renewal can be done from three months before expiry. I left mine a bit tight, but the office gave me a three-month validity paper to cover me if stopped before the new one comes through.

I am not having much luck with getting my Spanish license. I applied 2 months before my 70th birthday via a gestor and - although I have a Trafico stamped photocopy of my old license, which I'm told entitles me to drive - My gestor tells me Trafico say DVLA is 'paralyzed' and they haven't heard back that I have an entitlement to drive'.

I found this strange, so I phoned DVLA and they say they haven't had a request from Trafico! They sent me the entitlement to drive document but I am now over 70.....

I am still leaving it in the hands of my gestor but I will phone DVLA again, they did say they would fax a copy of the entitlement through to Trafico if I wanted them to. Dunno what else to do really, especially as I am now over 70.......:( My gestor also hinted Trafico might 'close my case' in a few months if they still haven't heard anything. I'm not sure what that means. I am wishing I'd gone myself now but the gestor sorted out my OH's exchange of license OK and I thought it would save me the trouble. Wrong!

I swapped my Norwegian license for a Spanish one, after I passed seventy, I renewed it, but that was only valid for two years, the next renewal was simple, all done at a local doctors office, cost only € 50 and lasted 5 years, I have just renewed again, same easy, peasy.
