I believe what is new about these meters is the ability to use a smartphone so you only pay for the exact period you park.
Or you can guess how you will be parked and put in the appropriate fee.
I don't think the meters have changed for well over a year or so.
I will have a closer look next time I'm in Fuengirola.

I use the E-Park system in Almunecar and Granada. As yet, Fuengirola is not one of the towns where you can use it. One major advantage is that you can top it up remotely if you underestimated the length of your stay.

That sounds like the system I'm thinking of.
I'm fairly sure a read an article in one of the freebie papers to say that it was , or soon will be, available in Fuengirola.

Yes, I would imagine it would be. They have added quite a few towns over the last few months. The meter system looks the same as the one here and the e-park can be added later as it does not affect the meters. You do not display anything on your car. When the traffic warden comes to the car, she uses a number plate recognition scanner in her hand held machine. It scans your number and indicates that you have paid.

You top up your balance within the app via a pre registered credit card.

I wonder how many people have used the e-park system, entered their "start of parking time" and forgotten to enter their "end of parking time"?
I could imagine, if this happened, somebody clocking up a large car parking bill.

It doesn't work like that. You enter the amount you wish to put on the meter and it tells you when the time will expire. You don't enter the start time as that is taken to be the current time, the end time is calculated from the amount you enter.

You also have to enter the city, which car (you can have more than one on the account) and the parking zone type if there are multiple zones.

5 minutes before your time expires, you get a warning with a sound and you can then add some more money to extend your time (up to the maximum amount allowed in that zone).

Sounds like a well thought out and designed system.
Let's hope it spreads to all the other places with parking meters.

It doesn't work without a smartphone. You would just buy a ticket at the machine in the normal way.

I was in Fuengi yesterday. The old system where you enter your reg number is still being used. When the new system is activated they will run side by side.

it seems like alot of money to invest in technology.. to get rid of people carrying change? i cant really see any other "advantage" of it, for the "normal" person ?

ie my parents. they have no smart phone, well she does, but she cant use it. she´d still carry change and do it the "old" way. I dont know if you´d ever be able to make it "smart phone only" becase of all the old people in spain, or the people that dont like to rely on anything but cash in their pockets?

Personally im all for a "no cash" life, i genuinely believe that all you need to carry is a smart phone. I can however appreciate that this will not become reality for generations to come. Apart from little things like this.. which definatly make my life easier haha
