old car plate

Postby wollie » Thu Jul 21, 2016 5:23 pm

I have an "A" licence plate from 1983 I think, it has ATV at the front... I am wondering if there is any interest in plates like this...
I was told people may be interested in this kinda stuff....

Just curious that's all...
many thanks..

Old Spanish plates have a 2 digit province identifier at the front. MA1234AA being an example.

Are you talking about a Spanish plate or a UK plate?

"A" is the suffix letter for a UK 1983 car so unless coincidence I assumed it was a British plate.

Having said that though the "ATV" bit would be the last three letters. 1963 would fit the bill if "ATV" cam first.

Is there a market for Spanish reg. numbers by the way, do they get sold off by the licensing authority as they do in the UK?

Interesting one.

Thanks for replies...
The plate UK and goes ATV A####....

On a related topic I see some old 40+ year old cars in Spain... just wonder what vintage rules as regards having one of these?

Yes the sequence would be AAA ### A. Further I think there were very few suffix A issued and the sequence fully started in 1964 with B.
Long time ago though I would have been 14 and far more interested in number plates than now.
As far as I am aware there is no fascination with private plates in Spain, you get what you are given thank goodness.

No, as Lyric said, you get what you get.

They also never use any vowels in the plate which tends to rule out meaningful three letter words.

The first number in the current series was 0000 BBB

They used vowels in the earlier plates Sid, my previous Spanish plate had one. Anyway interested to get to find out what Wollies plate actually is. It's baffling me at the moment as to what it could be,

That was the previous series. They had to use vowels for the names of the provinces.

OK, so we can answer the question now a bit easier Wollie. The only way the plate would be worth a few bob is if it had a single number..ie A1 ATV, probably that would be worth 500-700 quid. A 2 digit plate A42 ATV DVLA would probably ask £199 inc. transfer fees.

Check out the DVLA number plate sales site and you'll get the feel for prices. Cheers.

PS is it still on a car or on retention?

Thanks the plate still on car though car has not being used/taxes for 5 years, what does retention mean as this I may do?

I am more curious than interested in the monetary value....

If you have a "cherished" number then it can be removed from the car, car can be returned to it's original number and sold/scrapped, and you can hold the plate on "retention" for a nominal fee until another car comes along that you feel you want to fit it too.

80 quid and form V317 from DVLA is all it takes. I think you may be able to do it on line now too. I'd be surprised if you can't.

Have to say the DVLA website and the ease of dealing with car matters is now incredibly good, they have done a cracking job with it.
