I see there is currently another campaign to promote wearing of seat belts, this time backed up by cameras on overhead gantries.
It is ironic, then, to see the Guardia and Policia largely ignoring all this, by continuing to drive about unbelted. Presumably, like classic cab drivers, they see themselves as somehow immune from collisions. I can think of better ways for my taxes to be spent than on rest-of-life care and rehab for unnecessarily damaged police officers. If they don't set an example, what hope?

In the UK, police and taxi drivers are exempt from wearing seat belts. I assume the same applies in Spain.

I gave up hope when i saw them parking on roundabouts on their mobiles blocking your view of oncoming traffic and smoking next to a bunch of hay bales while on duty at a local fiesta!

I gave up hope when repeatedly seeing police cars parked on pedestrian crossings, while the officers visited the tabac.

But, have you ever seen a police officer in Spain "frequently jump" during working hours? My understanding is that they go through windscreens and break bones just like the rest of us!

Re: Seat belt wearing campaign
A few weeks back I did a random 30 car survey and counted 5 drivers on mobile phones and one actually texting on the move.
Prompted by this post I did a similar survey of vehicles, from the same cafe table in Loja at 2p.m. rush hour, this time 100 cars. 29 were not wearing their seat belts. I was very surprised it was that high. I suspect that the number would have been lower on motorways but who knows.

I remember seeing a local police car being driven around Nerja.
The policeman driving wasn't wearing his seat belt, Holding his phone to his ear with one hand and a cigarette in the other hand.
Cheers
