Hi
Sorry if this has been said before!
I want to bring my Audi to Spain where I plan to live.
I have been offered insurance by a company in Marbella, who say they will insure my UK car on a yearly basis. Does this sound kosher? Insurance buy says if I keep it off the road in a garage it should be fine. I would drive back to the UK once a year for the MOT.
I would re-matriculate it but I may only live in Spain for a couple of years + it sounds like an expensive job.
Any advice please?
Spanish insurance on a UK car?

Hi debaura,
Welcome to The Forum................
Some light reading.................

Get a quote from a Gestor that specialises in Vehicle Transfers............and then that will take the guessing out of how expensive it is..........

All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.
Re: Spanish insurance on a UK car?
Under the EU 4th directive a car has to be insured in the Country it is registered in so unless the offer you have is via a uk company ten I would be careful.
It is expensive and a Spanish registered RHD car is next to useless in Spain if you want to sell it. If you go that route it is very easy to re register it back in the UK if you wish to later on. V55 and send your details to DVLA. Personally I would never register a RHD car to Spanish.
Why not just insure it in the UK though?

Legally the plates would need to be changed and as a spanish resident it would be illegal for you to own or drive (unless the owner is with you)a non spanish plated car
Re: Spanish insurance on a UK car?
Hello thank you costakid that is very helpful, especially about converting back to UK plates. I hope to live in Spain for a few years and then return to the UK to do a degree.costakid wrote:Under the EU 4th directive a car has to be insured in the Country it is registered in so unless the offer you have is via a uk company ten I would be careful.

My UK insurance is valid as third party for 3 months in the EU. Is there something I am missing here with being able to use if for longer in Spain?
I know I could get 6 months UK covered insurance but that still is not long enough.
If I were to drive back to the UK every 6 months would that do?
Or is there another way perhaps. How would I insure it in the UK and be legal in Spain please costakid?
Any help much appreciated .

Re: Spanish insurance on a UK car?
Are you taking residency? If you are living in Spain full time you should be a resident but not everyone obeys that rule. If your a resident you can't drive a UK registered vehicle. Its illegal.
Taking it out of the country every 6 months is not an option.
You either live here as a resident and get a Spanish plated car or you live here like a lot of brits under the radar and drive your uk car. Some Uk insurers will do more than 90 day cover. Saga cover you but only if your over 50.

Also the costs of a ferry back and forth over two years and petrol etc wouldnt that add upto the near the same amount as changing the plates??
