Can anyone recommend an insurer they know will temporarily cover a foreign registered car? I am bringing mine from France and want to get it on Spanish plates, but my French insurance runs out at the end of the month. I've tried Linea Directa but they say only Spanish cars. Sabadell won't answer me.
In France no-one blinked about insuring a Brit car during the re-registration process, but it seems Spain may be more complicated.
Many thanks for any advice.
Car insurance during import process?
Re: Car insurance during import process?
Hola
Since no-one else has replied - I'll recommend a local company that speaks English and oes a good job. I have no connection with the company except I use them for my insurance

Just realised I forgot to thank you for this dxf, apologies! Sadly the company mentioned never replied to my query, I guess they don't do what I'm after.
Re: Car insurance during import process?
You will struggle as under the EU4th directive a car has to be insured in the country that it is registered in. It is possible for some insurers to give a 30 day window and insure the car on its chassis number and not the registration number.
Re: Car insurance during import process?
Most spanish insurers will cover on foreign plates for years, as long as they have affiliates in the relevant country. Liberty seguros & Mapfre both cover the UK legally by supplying the dvla& MID with onfo each week . Just use a decent agent & ask for French cover.

Re: Car insurance during import process?
Thanks for the replies and my apologies again for the delay; I don't visit this site a lot! To update my previous post, Sabadell got back to me and just said "no" whereas a local broker said it wasn't worth their trouble! I never got in touch with Mapfre or Liberty but ended up using a company called segurospordias.com . We found them advertising on an ITV station website and they work through AXA and others to insure foreign and specialist cars. It's not cheap and it's not for everyone's circumstances, but I only needed my car on occasional weekends and the trip to the ITV so it was fine for me. IIRC prices started at around 35€fully comp for a couple of days and then went to around 85€ for a full week. It might be cheaper for some as it includes a myriad of things I probably didn't need but couldn't be bothered to argue about.
We did occasionally have to wait to hear back from them - seemingly only one person in the office handles foreign cars - but a friendly and efficient service all handled over the phone and email. I would recommend them for anyone in a similar situation.
The car is finally re-registered in Spain now anyway (never doing that again...).

Re: Car insurance during import process?
But that breaches EU law. Not sure how you would be if you made a claim. They may say no comprendo amigogus-lopez wrote:Most spanish insurers will cover on foreign plates for years, as long as they have affiliates in the relevant country.
