Car Windows

Does anyone know if it illegal if the passenger car window is not working? Cannot be opened.

Thanks in advance for advice!

I hope not, mine is jammed shut with a piece of wood. It doesn't get checked at the ITV!

I have never seen them test the windows. I'm not even sure it is a legal requirement.

As has been mentioned on other ITV threads.
Testing varies from one centre to another, one tester to another, day of the week etc etc.
I have had my windows tested to see if they open/ shut.
One rear one didn't but it was not noted on the test summary.
When I took my wife's car, to the Algorobo centre there was a new tester on duty, being supervised by another tester.
He tested everything including the fuel flap and fuel cap.
Never had those tested before.
Cheers

Hello again

You can all sleep soundly in your beds tonight as drama has been averted!

It wouldn't go up so we opened the door panel and just pushed it up a couple of days ago, so at least it was closed.

As luck would have it I had a mate staying who is an electrical engineer and he fixed it, thank God. It wasn't the motor as was motoring down but not up. Assume that some muck/gunk had got on the track and was travelling down stopping it going up.
He gave it a sizable spray of 2 in 1.

But thanks for your comments. As I thought, it varies from place to place, and for sure I would do my ITV where they checked absolutely everything....

It would probably have cost a bit to take it into a garage, certainly more than the couple of pints which was my bill this time.

Cheers

Depends on make/model, but new scissors regulator/mechanism costs as little as 15 GBP - usually the motor is OK but the mechanics get broken with use.......ask me how I know?.....I've got an elderly Discovery!....never had windows checked at ITV

Had my ITV done a few months ago in Algorobo and they didn't check the windows, however, the tester spoke a bit of English and a sense of humour as I was wearing a rather loud shirt and he threatened to fail me as it could dazzle oncoming motorists....all done with a big smile...refreshing.

Spray silicon on the guides this will ensure smooth operation.

Yes, WD40/silicon spray the felt channels if the window movement starts to get sluggish. Not a bad idea to do this once or twice a year anyway.

Complete failure is often the thin steel cables of the lift mechanism rusting and snapping. Best renewed with stainless.
