Small Tear on MotorBike Seat

Postby john the baptist » Wed Oct 11, 2017 8:41 am

Hi ive have a small tear due to wear on my motorbike seat. i dont need or want to get the whole thing re-done but was hoping for some advice on what i can stick on for a fix before the rain comes in. the seat it plastic and ive tried superglueing my sons knee patches but is did not hold as they have a heat based glue for ironing.

Black duck tape does not work as it comes off in the rain. and thoughts ???? its needed to keep out the rain.

I've seen repair kits for this purpose in some of the larger Chino shops, and I suggest that you would be looking for vinyl repair kits, also probably available on e-bay.
I've always used epoxy resin glue for repairs rather than super glue.... more durable.

Gordon.

Try ebay for a replacement cover. Lots available and easy to fit.

No. Exopy resin is a two part mix, a glue gun is a hot melt glue.

Polyurethane adhesive (comes in a cartridge) from a good ferreteria. Available in several colours, including black.
Sticks to glass, metal, plastic, fabric, and remains flexible like rubber.
Henkel/Pattex 'Solyplast' PU298 is what I use here.

Good Morning John,
No, epoxy resin glue isn't the same as using a glue gun.
A glue gun uses a heat process to melt the stick form glue to allow you to apply and mold the glue. it is very useful and I've used a glue gun since the 1970's when for instance I joined picture frames with it, however it is not as durable and strong as epoxy resin glue.
The epoxy glue comes in two separate applicators and it is necessary ( carefully) to mix the two compounds ( resin and hardener) and using equal quantities mix slowly, but thoroughly, it is easy to work with as it takes awhile to dry.
I've personally used this product since the 1970's and have used it to repair and strengthen many items from plastic to semi- precious stones,it does take a few hours to reach total bonding but it is good because it allows time to use more precision.
I would suggest that for the use you need, that you give it time ( overnight) to harden, it is cheap and available in' Chino' shops, it comes in syringe form so is easy to get the correct equal mix ( important ).
Last week I did an emergency repair job on an old mans dentures, it worked perfectly and he's decided not to bother going to the dentist... :D
The original product that I used was called Araldite, it is now much cheaper to obtain.
Good Luck with your project, I'm sure that you will find it satisfactory...
Regards,
Gordon the glue sniffer....
