Deceased Land Rover THE RESULTS SHOW
Deceased Land Rover THE RESULTS SHOW
My car has just died. All the lights come on and it is not the battery, but it will not turn over at all.
Anyone have any idea what it may be?

Re: Deceased Land Rover
do you get a dull click when you turn ignition switch?
My advice always is to join a forum for your vehicle. Lots of folk out there with a wealth of knowledge on older vehicles and may even have a part if needed.

Hi Unicorn,
" All the lights come on and it is not the battery,".............what lights, if its the dash they don't need much power, are the Headlights on main beam bright
"do you get a dull click when you turn ignition switch"........... and do the dash lights dim

All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.
Re: Deceased Land Rover
auto or manual, if auto it could be the switch on the gearbox that prevents it being started in gear.

Re: Deceased Land Rover
Check the main battery connections*. A bit of resistance there could be enough to operate lights, but not the 200-300amp for the starter.
Two clues:
- After trying to crank, one of the battery terminals gets warm
- With some lights switched on (eg interior light) when you try to crank they extinguish
Possible, also that the battery has failed internally. Try another one, or a jump start.
* If battery connectors are original lead (Pb) lumps, they can relax their grip on the cable strands, and allow the copper strands to oxidise (blacken). This offers resistance. Cut the old ones off, and replace with new.
Check also the Ground connection from Battery to body/engine. A successful jump start (or starting ok with a new battery) would rule this out.

Forget the headlights for the momemt.Unicorn wrote:Headlights go on full beam...
If you sit in the car, and put the interior light on, what happens to its brightness when you try to crank?
Does it dim, or go out?

Re: Deceased Land Rover
No it doesn't
Re: Deceased Land Rover
Have you tried bump starting it? If it goes with a bump that eliminates a lot of things and points to just a few.

Then your battery and its connections are good.Unicorn wrote:No it doesn't
No click of the starter solenoid (part of the starter motor) indicates that either the solenoid isn't being energised by the ignition switch (the switch could be faulty) or the solenoid itself is jammed.
You will need an auto electrician to check this out, and make a test of the starter motor by a direct connection to it.
Starter motors themselves can fail or jam, but no click signifies a supply or solenoid fault.

Could a mouse or rat have chewed on a vital lead somewhere? We had that once on our Defender !!

Unless I've missed something you don't say what LR you've got. Is it a Td5 engine? ........'cos I know all about them as I have a Td5 Disco.
Please tell.

Re: Deceased Land Rover
I thought Td6 engines were Range Rover and Td4 were Freelander - both BMW derived units - but what do I know - I worship at the shrine of Td5 Discos!!!
Two pieces of useful advice in all the above replies:
1. Join a specific forum dedicated to your vehicle viz. Freelanders
2. From all the clues you've given, I'd be looking at the starter motor and its solenoid.
Good luck - if I come across anything useful I'll be back with a post.

Here's some useful stuff - not specific to a Td4 - but worthwhile background reading (as if you've nothing better to do!):

Re: Deceased Land Rover
Mapfre came and took the car away to the garage.
The Mapfre man thinks is is the starter motor.
So fingers crossed.
Costakid, he did try to bump it!
