DPF Problems

I heard the best solution for this is to remove the insides of the dpf and put it back up. I thought that sounded a bit dodgy to say the least and would be a problem passing an MOT. I would have thought it'd be an automatic fail.

Depending on vehicle ................ a blast down the Autovia/Motorway will regenerate....as it needs to get HOT.

Some later models have a manual regeneration switch............... Google your vehicle Make/Model and year for info.

If you decide to remove the internals remove and open it from the top and then weld up and refit, the mot station won’t be able to see what you have done. You will need a remap otherwise it will fail mot on emissions but we do it a lot in the uk because DPF filters block easy and are expensive to replace. Its short journeys that cause he problem. Reps cars are always clear as do long trips. Very unlikely it will clear on a blast down the motorway as suggested.

It may be totally irrelevant to your situation but when my dpf was setting off a warning light it proved to be a sensor and cost v little to fix. From my chat with the mechanic it seems that they can tell a lot about the state of the filter room the readout. Mine, at 8 years, 80k miles was almost completely empty which was nice to know

The worst for blocking are the mums cars on the school run that only ever do short journeys. I opened one up on an Audi A6 and the soot was that hard it was like concrete. My mate chiseled it all out and welded it back up and the car was more economical and quicker without the DPF. You will as i said earlier need a remap but thats not that expensive these days.

I have had 4 diesel cars, mostly from almost new but non with a DPF filter. I won't touch them...The best was a Peugeot, the worst was a Golf...TBH Golf may have a good name but after owning two i can say i have had better cars without the price of the badge...My son bought a newish Golf diesel with a DPF filter and had nothing but probs from the start, in the end they gave him a full refund..

Diesel particulate filter. All to do with being green and saving the planet, problem is they are an absolute pain in the ar++

Just to be picky the DPF is about stopping particulates, which aren't good for you, and they are pretty good at that. However they do make you burn more diesel, both by making the exhaust less efficient by blocking it and then by pouring in extra diesel to burn off the soot during regeneration. But I would agree that the dpf and the exhaust gas recirculation valve are real pains in the whatsits
