Koi Carp

Postby Campo Steve » Mon May 04, 2009 1:34 pm

Having purchased a house in the Campo we are now the owners of four Koi Carp. The were left by the previous owners of the house who were going to build a pond but didn't have time to do it, and we don't want one. The fish are currently living in a deposito set up especially for the purpose and includes a water filter with UV light treatment.

The largest fish is orange and is about 14 inches long. The other three are between 7 and 9 inches long. One orange and black and the other two grey and black.

If anyone has a nice deep pond and would like the fish they are more than welcome to them. You would have to collect them though. Located in the campo off the road from Benamargoa and Rio Gordo. Take all four and you can have the deposito and filter as well.

It's a fibre glass tank (I also have the lid). It has a hole drilled in the side 10cms from the top. I assume that is where a pipe would be connected if used as a deposito.

Measures 1.2m x 1.0m x 0.7m (up to the hole). By my calculations that means it holds approx 850 litres.

Sides below the water line are rather green. It is also sitting on concrete, presumably to level it, but without emptying the water out, and thereby killing the fish (which I don't want to do), it is difficult to tell if the concrete is stuck to it. Should chip off OK though.

Mowser, they just get worse. Almost as bad as your dad's jokes!

Almost as bad as your dad's jokes!
... and these are equally as bad as your father-in-law's.

By the way - I've been barred again from the Hootsman again. I'm now Mt TinyUrl, or Linoleum Blownapart. Failing that I'm Colin Olcars.

Spanish lad, don't know if you've had koi before,so forgive me if I say something and it's like teaching you to suck eggs.
I have koi in the uk and when I've bought new fish they've always been transported in polythene bags, filled with enough water to cover the fish but with sufficient gap at the top to hold air.
The bags are then tied and put in a box.
I say this because I have visions of you transporting a tank and water sloshing all over the place.
The method above is good for an hour or so and the fish should be kept cool.
Once again, apologies if you are familiar with koi handling.

It wouldn't fit in my car. A pickup would be better.

Nimrod's suggestion sounds good, or we just lower the level of the water to make the deposito light enough to handle. It would need a big bag fo the larger fish.

How far would you have to transport. We are about 10-15 minutes from Rio Gordo and 20 - 25 minutes from Benamargosa. If you are handy you are more than welcome to come and check them/it out.

i´d need to get them and the tank cos ive got nothing to put then in this end.

i´ll look into it and see what i can do, but no promises.

if you do use my method of transport the plastic bags should look like balloons with water 1/3 to 1/2 way up.
It's better to move the fish this way, they get much less stressed.

Koi carp in plastic bags is fine but the bags MUST remain cool. I well remember bringing home goldfish in a plastic bag from the fairground. The longest any of them lasted was overnight.

Poor Gordon 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7. I miss them so.

That's right mowser.
In an earlier post i reckoned an hours journey would be enough, keeping the fish cool.
The one big fish to be transported is the one to worry about,he is the calming influence in the pool that the others will look to.

There is a mild sedative that can be used on carp:- valerian root. Health food shops sell it. It's also sold in a number of street markets (Torre del Mar & Almuñecar to name two). It's primarily for people with sleeping problems but it is recommended for the transportation of Koi carp.

Unfortunately I don't know the correct dosage.

Had to move the deposito yesterday to make room for some building work. Transferred the fish to a smaller tank and took the opportunity to clean the deposito. They survived and are now back in the deposito and quite happy in their new, clean, surroundings. :D

Still looking for a home though.

It took 18 months from when we first inherited the fish but they now have a new home. A friend of a friend of a friend has taken them. Everybody happy and I am told the fish have settled in well in their new home.

I'll be visiting them tomorrow because during the transfer our car keys ended up with the fish. It's a long story, but at least I get a run on the bike to get them back.
