Re: shar pei puppies
Katy and Mouser can you please calm down or I will have to start deleting these posts which are adding very little to the topic.
Thanks

Re: shar pei puppies
There does seem to be a bit of a bullying/pack mentality as soon as one particular poster airs their views.
Husky dogs (and many other breeds) are not bred for this climate, and they do prefer a cooler temperature
Yes, they will survive the summer if kept properly - trouble is many people use them as outdoor guard dogs - with no shade/access to water/chained up etc
That was the original point I made before all the nit-picking started
Yes, many British people do better in cooler climates - but unlike us humans, animals do not have the luxury of being able to choose where they live, so rather a pointless comment to make.
Back on topic: imho, all breeding of dogs is irresponsible, for reasons previously stated.

I like the kittens on the right.
There's a stray (probably dumped as she's very friendly) who's been coming daily to our house for the past two weeks. No-one knows where she's come from. If this continues much longer I guess she's chosen us.
Off to price cat litter, litter trays and vet bills.

Re: shar pei puppies
Correct, you have been adopted by the cat.Mowser wrote:. If this continues much longer I guess she's chosen us.
Enjoy.

Re: shar pei puppies
When we went to Pepe's Refugio to look for a dog, I had said I was not going to get a dog unless it 'felt right' I went into a kennel to look at a whippit type dog, I sat on the ground (it was very clean) and called the whippit to me, a Jack Russel type dog came and sat on my lap. Every time I tried to get her off she was back. Eventually I got the whippit on my lap, the next thing I knew the jack Russel was back with the whippit on her head.....not so much me choosing a dog as a dog choosing me! She is a lovely dog. She is the sort of dog who would go off with anyone though!

Re: shar pei puppies
We weren't going to have pets here. However, two dogs and a cat adopted us so that was that. All doctored and chipped etc now. Mind you, if they hadn't adopted us, OH would probably have been to the rescue centre anyway!
I've got an inferiority complex, but it's not a very good one!
Re: shar pei puppies
all of us who have pets are equally guilty of having animals that are not living in their natural habitat or environment, whether it´s a husky, or a cat... whether the animal was bought from ebay, or from a breeder, or free from the animal rescue centre.
keeping a dog in a house, or in a fenced-in finca, feeding it with food from a tin or from a sack, sticking microchips in it , walking it on a lead..etc etc etc..none of our pets live in their natural habitat..and the end of the day we have pets for our own satisfaction, of course we treat the animals as best we can..sometimes even with too much "care"..but nevertheless it´s for our own enjoyment.
is any pet owner in a position to criticise another owner because they have a pet that is not in its natural environment, or because they bought it from ebay or from a breeder?
I am a pet owner, or rather my cats own me !!they are all street cats, for free, but I wouldn´t criticise someone for selling or buying from ebay.

Re: shar pei puppies
what's a natural environment for a dog then? Based on that analogy we would all still be living in caves.
Re: shar pei puppies
????
personally I don´t consider myself to be a dog.
Re: shar pei puppies
I think Paula's analogy Julian is fair. We choose not to live in a completely natural environment for us and so do doggies & moggies, they will do everything they can to adopt a human

Re: shar pei puppies
Julian you raised an interesting point but what is a modern domesticated dog's natural environment?
They have lived so long domesticated that isn't that now their natural environment.
I'm pretty sure that if I turned my dog out to fend for himself he would quickly starve to death.
My cats would probably fair better judging by the number of mice, rats, voles, lizards, insects and the occasional pigeon or rabbit they have caught.
Cheers

I agree with that Gerry.gerryh wrote:

Cat's may appear to be domesticated but underneath that they are still wild animals with all the instincts. 5000 years of domestication hasn't really changed much.
That's why I respect them so much.
