Rescue dogs & cats

Postby Paula » Mon Nov 28, 2011 1:00 pm

This is purely out of personal interest after a long conversation I had with someone regarding getting a dog.
How many rescue animals do you have, or have you had whilst living in Spain?

I have one rescue cat, rescued from bad owners rather than a rescue centre. I would have another but she just will not accept another cat on her territory. So I have been doing a little short term fostering instead.

1 dog from Pepe's refuge, 1 dog, whose abandoned mum gave birth in the campo. 1 kitten, had her from 3 days old, she is now a 10 week old terror! The folk who had her tried to hand rear the other kittens but they all died, our kitty is the only survivor. The mum was killed on the road. Our older kittens, aprox 7 months old, came from another family who had cats everywhere.

We have one dog, a boxer, that was abandoned. We took it in off the street.

We are down to 2 cats and one dog now :( We returned to the UK with 2 cats and 2 dogs. I don't think we will have any more pets. My 2 cats are 14 and 20 yrs and I think they are a bit old to adapt to a new dog. Also we want to travel more and it is difficult, also I miss them. My oldest cat has lived in Geneva, London, about 4 houses in Spain, 6 months in Florida and now back to the UK. She was rescued from the family steelworks in Sheffield. She settles anywhere but if we moved to a place with open fireplaces we had to block them at first or she would climb up them!

At one time in Spain we had 2 dogs and 4 cats. All came from the animal charities, I would never buy a pet.

I have owned two dogs that you would regard as "rescue".
1. - which arrived on my doorstep full of ticks / fleas.
2. - a pup from a litter born in the campo close by.
Only have one dog now - number 2 above.

I do hope that this satisfies your personal interest, Paula. :D

I went to Spain with 4 dogs. Inherited another one straightaway with the house, and in the fullness of time 'acquired' more.....cut a long story short, I lost all bar one of the original 'English' dogs, and ended up bringing 4 Spanish 'rescue' dogs back to UK from Spain.......they think UK is great!! (But haven't seen snow yet....uh-oh.....)

We currently have 5 cats. We have re-homed 2 cats and one has died.

The oldest is 14 and we picked him up in Cyprus as our ship's cat. He traveled back with us via Turkey, Geeece, Italy and France. A very well traveled cat!

1 abandoned feral kitten which survived to the age of three . Sadly, died recently, poisoned in the nearby fields or gardens.

No rescues here as I am not always here, but I do feed 2 dogs that live in the street and one neigbours gives them food when I am away, I do deflea and worm them as well and there is a kennel in front that they use, and I have paid for 5 kittens to be sent to Germany that were dumped outside last year, its a good job that I am not here all the time or I would be over run with them !

We brought 1 cat here from the UK 11 years ago - she is still with us although looking a little old.
In the meantime we have had 1 dog from the rescue centre (he's still with us) and have taken in 4 feral cats and 1 dog. We have lost 2 cats to roaming dogs and the one feral dog died of (we hope) a heart attack on the track outside our house.
So - the net result is that we currently have 1 dog and 3 cats.
BTW - another two small pure black feral kittens with huge eyes have appeared over the last few days.
I am feeding them but have not taken them in (yet).
Does anyone know the telephone number of the lady that exports cats to Germany?
If so could you PM me?

Two dogs and one cat. Not rescued as such, they just adopted us!
I've got an inferiority complex, but it's not a very good one!

over 40 pets rescued by less than 15 people.
quite something isn't it :D I'm still trying to convince a friend not to buy from a breeder in the local paper, and save a dog from the rescue centre instead.

Well I certainly hope you succeed Paula.....
I honestly do think it verges on the immoral to buy from breeders in Spain when not only are there are SO MANY THOUSANDS of unwanted/abandoned/mistreated etc etc dogs at the centres -- many of them extremely well-bred -- but the ethics of many commercial breeders are questionable to say the least (same in UK!).
Please don't shoot me for this, folks...it's just my opinion
