Black squirrel?

Postby Wicksey » Wed Jun 06, 2012 10:23 am

Our cats have got this trapped up one of our palms this morning. Looks like a very dark squirrel which is the first I've ever seen here. We have stoats and rabbits nearby but I thought squirrels would be higher up in the foothills of the mountains, whereas we are quite close to the coast.

Hi Sanian - you will need to register with Photobucket.com and up load your photo to that site. Once it's there, click on it and 4 differene codes will show under the photo. Choose the last one - beginning IMG, copy and paste It to your post. It won't show as an image until you 'submit' your post and then it will appear, just like Wicksey's.

That's a good photo of it Sanian. You obviously haven't got 3 cats to chase it!

Our squirrel shuffled around up in the palm all day until about 9pm when we saw it had moved onto the end of a branch and was looking interested in jumping down into the next tree. We herded the cats indoors and distracted them, and when we next looked out the squirrel had escaped, thank goodness. We envisaged it being caught overnight and brought into the house. We have had plenty of nights where we have been woken up by crashing and banging as one of the cats has brought in its catch, and chasing large rats around the bathroom at 3am is no fun  .

You want to see black squirrells, come to Ottawa in Canada. Black ones far outnumber any other colour.
It is my understanding that they were imported from China around 1900.

We do catch it alive in a bucket then take it out and release it ...... everything the cats catch gets saved if we can (even the snakes!) (although I'm sure some people would think we are mad, but I couldn't kill anything especially if it is furry!)
