Cat diet food
Cat diet food
I suppose that it is well known that male cats that have been 'done' can develop problems with stones and uniary tract infections.
A vet will get rid of the stones and then recommend a special diet which works. There are various brands available, usually only from vets, and they are quite expensive.
I have just noticed a diet food (dried) in Mercadonna seemingly specifically for this problem, and it works out about half the price.
Has anyone tried it instead of 'Hills' or 'Royal Canin' and if so did/does it work. We currently have a trouble free cat using 'Hills'.
I am open to what I think is a correct translation of the purpose of this stuff being corrected.

Re: Cat diet food
One of our cats had this problem and the vet said we should use the special stuff from Hills - mega expensive! He said that it contained a specific drug that was only available via a vet and that it wasn't available in "over the counter" brands.
I know there are brands that claim to be formulated for all sorts of problems but it is possible that they are not as effective. Of course he may have been making it up to ensure that I bought it from him but I doubt it.

Re: Cat diet food
Yes! I have 13 cats that were all "rescued" from some dire situation or another in and around us and the neutering is done by a great Vet in Sabanillas with the financial help of an animal charity in Gaucin. Some of the male cats have, from time to time, exhibited signs of partial blockage of the urinary tract and we've fed them the Mercadona dry food - green foil package about 800 grams or 1Kg (I can't remember which!) and "Tracto Urinario" on the package. Seems to work OK.

Re: Cat diet food
Ah ! that's the one, we have already had a heated debate (Mrs Merton) and decided to buy some and blend it into the diet to see, but Ta muchly for that.
Re: Cat diet food
Thats what I have done Lyric. I have had to feed my male cat urinary tract food as he develops stones. I now (as it is so expensive) mix it with the Mercadona's Ultima (half and half). However the difference between them is that whilst the veterinary food actually dissolves crystals as well as reduing the risk of them forming in the first place Ultima just reduces the risk of them forming. But some crystals will always form so what I do is mix it for two months and then I feed him for two weeks just the Royal Canin to dissolve any crystals that may be forming and so far so good. Yes it is expensive and mixing it with Mercanda's makes it less so.

Re: Cat diet food
Well the spoilt little brat gets the C/D wet food too, half a pouch a day, he seems to like the Ultima too.
We have found a source for mail order in Spain which, although the initial outlay is high it is 96 days supply (48 pouches) and it is just over half the vet's price per box of twelve.
We will see, he is doing alright for a cat that we never wanted and was dumped on us by the previous owner of the house !

Re: Cat diet food
Yes wet food is good! I cant get mine interested in wet food though just turns his nose up at it. Like wise, although my two are two feral cats I rescued from the street. They have both cost me a fortune one way and another - he has had two ops for stones but they are lovely arnt they. I wouldnt be without them though just wish I could find an outlet for cheaper Royal Canin!

Re: Cat diet food
I've just ordered some Royal Canin Feline Urinary S/O Moderate Calorie food from http://www.medicanimal.com 16,47 euros for 1.5 kg. free delivery if spend over 40 euros, 3,99 euros if not. They've an offer on at the moment of 15% off first order.
Re: Cat diet food
That is who we use for the wet food, if you order in Spanish it seems to be free courier and it comes from the UK in 5 days. As you have a € price that seems to be what you have done.
Re: Cat diet food
I have looked at that site but it comes to more than what I pay here! Have you got the contact to buy the Ultima food in Spain. I would not mind ordering that in bulk, I am fed up keep having to buy 800grams
