Dog Size and Dog Food Size

Postby Unicorn » Sun Nov 01, 2015 6:23 pm

Hi

Does anyone know if you have to give big dogs big dog food and small dog food their own special size?

Can I give a smallish dog any type of food or just little dog food or is it all marketing claptrap?

Thanks in advance for advice/comments.

Hi Unicorn,
Adult dog =Adult dog food.
Small dog , large dog feed according to body weight.

I feed my Ratonero Bodeguero Andaluz (body weight 11kg), the same food and quantity as my Huskys (20kg body weight). .......... :D

The recommendations on the packets are way over what you need to feed.,,, Ok will depend some on the dog type and activity levels. Weight dogs regularly and record.
All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.

Hi Enrique

Thanks.

That's right. With Hill's Science Plan, 'large breed' food is identical in composition to 'medium breed' - it's just the pellet/nugget size that is different. Food for puppies will be nutritionally different, of course.

Many sacks of dogfood dramatically overstate the daily quantity. Beware.

We feed our 3 Podencos with the same dry food with a little canned dog meat, they are all different sizes so we reduce the quantity accordingly.
They get 2 meals a day ( not large amounts ) and a few 'scraps', 2 of our dogs are street dogs so given the chance they will eat everything they can get their paws on, the youngest dog was born in 'captivity' and is much fussier.
We now buy the 'big sacks' from either Lidl or Mercadona , quite reasonable prices and the dogs seem happy..
Regards,
Gordon
