Strange Flying Insect

Postby Unicorn » Sun Aug 27, 2017 2:32 pm

A few times this week a large insect has flown in the window
I have not had a close look but it is like a skinny bee, makes no noise and has a ribbon type thing hanging down from it. Maybe 4cm long, but I haven't, understandably, got close.
Is it a type of hornet? I have no idea where to start to find out what it is.
It looks very mean.

Anyone know what it is - I have never seen one before this week?

Thanks

We know it as an articulated wasp.
Not particularly articulate, but does like making a nest in the nooks and crannies of bookshelves.

I think it must be the European Paper Wasp
Thanks for that

Articulate Torre? Never uttered a word in all the visits!

The second from the left in the photos is the one we get ... although it is a form of wasp (very common in Greece too) we have never known it to sting. They are a bit clumsy and do venture into the house looking for somewhere to build their clay nests which can make a bit of a mess. Make them uncomfortable, waft them outside again and close the windows til they drift off elsewhere. One problem they do cause, is when they get to the end of an uprotected pipe (gas pipe hanging off BBq for instance) as they crawl up out of sight and then block said pipe - not nice!

I find the ceiling fan sees them off pretty well.

I read that they do sting and can repeatedly as their sting is not the same design as a bee. Can be quite nasty - I must get an Epi pen as I have a bad reaction!
