I drove my Spanish plated car to the UK at Christmas, however it broke down whilst there, too expensive to repair so have decided to scrap it in the Uk how do I de register it from the local town hall tax in Spain?

In Spain you have to get a certificate from the scrap yard which is then used to de-register the vehicle.
I would imagine that you will need some kind of certificate from the UK scrap yard but this will have to be translated into Spanish and endorsed with the Apostille of the Hague Convention.
I would suggest that you contact either the Spanish consulate or a firm of bilingual Notaries Public to see if they can advise you on the exact procedure. These people may be able to help:

You need to get it right otherwise you could be paying the circulation tax on the vehicle for ever more.

Surely you can tell dgt it is sent to another country. If your Spanish is not up to it use a gestor. look here---
