ITV of NEW car after only 2 years!!!

Postby Lavanda » Sun May 09, 2010 8:30 am

We got a denuncia and fine from the Guardia the other day for not having an ITV on our car. It's only 2.5 years old. We thought we didn't need an ITV until after four years. I checked on this site. Yup! Four years.
WRONG!!!
It depends on the size of the car.
Be careful out there ... the Spanish know the law better than we do.

I thought it depended on what the car was used for previously, i.e. hire car etc. when it falls into the 2 year ITV catagory
Property owner in Andalucia since 2002. How time flies.

Those vans with side windows are different from "Tourismos", is it one of those?

We have a Citroen Jumpy. It seats 9 people but most of the time we don't have the back row of seats in the car. Apparently, we thought it was a car but the Guardia say it's a van!!! My post just wanted to highlight that the newness of a vehicle is not the issue for the ITV. We bought it brand spanking new and thought we had 4 years. Never mind. our innocence only cost 105 euros (30% discount for prompt payment!)

The bad news is that you have to have an ITV every year and once it is 5 years old the ITV is every 6 months!

Gosh, Sid! Is that right as the ITV place told us to come back in 2 years?

Hi Lavanda,
What did they stamp in the book and on the test report and what colour sticker did you get ,Yellow is for 2011, Green is 2010 . Not seen a 2012 yet 8)
Along top edge of sticker are the months and one will have a hole punched out that's valid until.
Sticker goes in right hand side of wind screen.

We got a red sticker (which is in the top right of the windscreen) with April punched and 12 on the sticker. On the paper we have a stamp with 26 abril 2012. Well, it's certainly confusing if Sid got it wrong. No wonder we got muddled up in the first place. :?

I think the ITV centres sometimes give the wrong duration. We have some friends who have a 12 year old car which was imported from Germany about 3 years ago, so has a "D" plate. They got 2 years last time, although I think they should only have got 1 because of the age

Hi El Cid,
I did qualify it by ..........check at your local ITV station.

The site didn't have any dates and is in blue not the usual green of the Junta Andalucia. :?

Thank you, Sid, but I find some of these sites too confusing for words and I'm having a day filing paperwork just to make my day even more boring ... and it's raining like crazy. :D

It really isn't too clear.

As far as I can see, a 9 seater is classed as a normal car with the usual 4 year starting point and two years after up to 10 but if it was a 9 seater ex rental vehicle then it's 2 years and then 1 year as I stated.

Lavanda, what does it say on the logbook as to the class of vehicle?

But, as always in Spain, the rules are often incorrectly applied or misinterpreted so I would go along with what the last ITV sticker says.

Your "car" is a furgoneta. If doesn't matter if you think it's a car. It's a furgoneta. First ITV is after 2 years. You should have received a reminder. I have a Fiat Doblo and before it was 2 years old, I was sent a card informing me about the ITV.

2nd point - you get the ITV every 6 months once the car is over TEN years old and not five. My car passed its ITV this year and now that it's six years old I've to have an ITV in April 2011.

In short:- If your car is based on a van (furgoneta) it's classed as a van and your first ITV is in 2 years.
ITV every 2 years till the car is 6 years old then it's every year till it's 10. After 10 years it's every 6 months.

Furgonetas are Fiat Doblo, Citroen Berlingo, Peugeot Partner etc.

The reason these cars are registered as Mixto Adaptible is that the matriculation tax is much less.

They are also limited to 100kph rather than the usual 120kph.

Allegedly after the 4 year ITV you can apply, free of charge to DGT to have them reclassified as Tourismo.

I'll have to look at the log book to check but it was a NEW car and not ex-rental or anything like that. We actually ordered the car and had to wait three months for it. When I asked the Guardia if there had been a mistake they said the car was classed as a van because of its length ...
