Old driving licence

Postby gruff » Wed Jun 20, 2018 9:17 am

My driving licence is the one I was issued with back in 1978. I'm proud of it, it's "unblemished". In the queue at Malagarcar last night a chap told me that a friend of his had been fined 3000 euros for having one of these and not having a photo type licence. What is the position? Malagacar are quite happy to accept it. I'm not resident.

It's quite possible he was fined, although €3000 sounds like an exaggeration. Although the old licence is valid, try explaining that to a Trafico officer who doesn't think it is valid.

For the sake of a few pounds I would change it for a photocard. That will normally be accepted as ID rather than having to have your passport handy.

I still have my old licence and am also proud of it. I never renewed to photo because they only last so many years then you have to renew at a cost. My old one is valid until I am 75 I think. Twice I have been stopped by the Gaudia in the last 3 years and it was ok both times. I think 3000 Euros sounds a bit of a porky. Drink driving is only 600 euro fine.

Hi costakid,

"My old one is valid until I am 75 I think"............might be worth checking..........If its a UK one.

My licence expires in 2022 when I will be 70. Hopefully it expires before I do.
