I wasn't aware that "proof of income" was needed to obtain a NIE number?
I know it is usually needed to apply for what is commonly known as resedecia.
Applying via a consulate from home would be far more expensive, due to travel costs, fees etc than applying here at our local police station.

I posted about a year ago that my friend in Las Palmas (where I spend a good portion of the year) was refused an N I E unless he had a specific need for it to buy something, car, house etc, I might add that I obtained an N I E 25 years ago in Fuengirola in less than 1 hour without any documentation other than my passport, the rules may have changed OR they have different criteria in different areas !!

Thinks changed after the crisis. I’ve met people here who have been refused residency because they haven’t got work lined up.

Work shouldnt matter aslong as you have private healthcare and can show income. Although alot are wanting proof of regular income now rather than a lump sum which was enough in the past
