Keep talking about OUR Freedom of Movement

Postby Superplonk » Mon Nov 19, 2018 10:21 am

I notice that a recent thread was closed as it was deemed irrelevant to Andalucia for straying too far into British politics.
It is alarmingly clear that misunderstandings about what is about to happen to many of us are rife, not just in the UK, but among those who have chosen to come and live here.
A British Prime Minister is pleased to announce changes that will prevent us from voting where we now live. Many of us can no longer vote in the UK because the same PM has failed to implement her manifesto pledges. Assuming that Spain allows us to stay, we will be "landlocked", that is we will lose the right to live or work in other EU countries. The lucky minority that qualifies a for Spanish passport as a means of retaining EU rights will be required to renounce UK passports. This is no solution if you need to split your time between the UK and Europe for family or professional reasons - many will have to choose whether to live in the same country as our spouse or our ageing parents.

If you find yourself in conversation with someone who thinks that buying a flat in MIjas will allow them to retire or work in Spain, please take the time to explain that losing Freedom of Movement has far greater effects on UK citizens than other Europeans. They lose easy access to one country (while usually retaining the vote in their own), we lose it in 27.

Rights have been stripped from people many times in the past, but outside the pages of Orwell has it ever been this brazen?

Yes, it was, based on the forum rules, which currently are being revised to clarify this.

However, we will be starting a new thread specifically about the effects of Brexit on members which will be closely moderated to avoid the usual Brexit clashes which inevitably become personal.

Your post is exactly the sort of subject that does need to be discussed, so I am happy for this thread to continue here for the time being, but any posts must be directly relevant to the subject of the thread.

There are now apparently lengthy delays in many parts of France for ex-pats wanting to take out French residencia, which is processed and granted by local mayors. In some areas, the wait for an interview for the application has been reported to be up to two years.

This is partly because of the large increase in such applications, which local town halls are not equipped to deal with, and also an (understandable) reluctance for by many local French administrations to 'pick up the cost' of this bit of Brexit fallout. OK, you can argue they should be more flexible - or maybe just charge suitably for upgrading the service.

The points about about our loss of EU rights - bad enough not being able to vote (nationally) in either UK or Spain - are really worrying, especially the right to settle.

One reason why they have a problem in France is because, unlike in Spain, foreigner registration was optional. As a result very few applied for it and the rest are now in full Brexit Panic Mode!

Good article here . https://www.thelocal.fr/20180601/why-br ... -right-now

The problem in Spain will be with those who haven’t already applied for residence and have tried to live here under the radar.

Apparently we will have visa free travel both ways for short holidays etc. As you say the long stayers who have lived here for years under the radar may have a problem. All of this agreement will be irrelevant if we have a hard brexit.

Rights of EU to remain (living/working) in their settled country seem to have been agreed in the main Withdrawal document.

What hasn't been agreed is the future right of British citizens to move to another EU country to live/work, so any thoughts of Brits living (even with residencia) in Spain and perhaps wanting to move to France, for example, will need to go on hold - or an advance application to French authorities for permission to settle/become resident.

The Brexit "numbers control" works both ways, and the right of Brits' 'freedom to live and work' is about to be jettisoned, or at least kicked down the road.
