Moto maintenence

Hi,I have a new moto,which has just been in for its 1000km service.(they performed an oil change on it)
can anyone tell me if i have to do anything to maintain the item,until the next service?
I havnt a clue about it,and just wondered if i should be doing anything to it other than ride/have accidents on it???

I have had a quick read of the maintenence section..the pages go on forever and ever.
Can you be a babe for me colinm and just break it down in simple blonde lady terms-i cant do all that to it,i would never get the thing back together again ..take this off here,polish/wipe that..oh blimey..the list is endless
please take pity on us stupid girlies,and help make it simpler

ok, basic checks and maintenance.......
for a 2 stroke moto......
every 1000km...
check front and rear brake pads for wear,
check brake lever free play (not necessary if disc brakes)
check steering bearings (turn handlebars from side to side slowly and check for tight spots or roughness).
check lights, bulbs, horn, brake light switches.
check tyre pressures, tread depth and for general tyre damage.
check oil levels.

every 5000km....
check fuel lines for cracks,
replace spark plug,
clean airfilter and re-oil. (replace air filter every 10,000 km.
clean airfilter and v belt case,
check battery electrolyte level and check breather not blocked,
check brake hoses for cracks (replace brake fluid every 2 years and brake hoses every 4 years),
check wheels for run out (buckles) and flat spots,
check wheel bearings for looseness or roughness,
lube centre stand and prop stand,
check front fork for oil leaks and/or damage,
check all nuts, bolts, screws etc,
final transmission oil - check for leaks

if its a 4 stroke, then...
at 3000 km change engine oil,
at 5000 km check valve clearances and change engine oil,

and then for all.....
at 10,000km relace airfilter and replace v belt.

It had a service at 1000kms
and i suppose i had better do the first lot of basic checks,as it has just done 2000kms.(oh no..not looking forward to this )
The bulbs have just been changed as one blew.So i would say its just the brake pads,and oil levels.tyre pressure was only done last week.steering and brakes are fine.I think its the rider that needs a basic check and maintenance-as im not very good am i?
I will check those points later.

Peachy´s right Colin. You are a little sweetie to do that for us girlies. Well, i´ve gotta coupla 100km more to do before i start doing my checks, so will give me time to check if mine is 2 stroke or 4 stroke

Hi,
Thanks for the list of service tasks, a couple of more questions.
My MH 50cc has a separate oil tank to mix the 2 stroke oil , is the 2 stroke oil the same as used in strimmers and chain saws ?
The hand book doesn't show the tyre pressures is there a "rough rule" for the size and type of tyre, tried a look on the Continental tyre site but my bike isn't shown.

Jen, its possible to use chainsaw mix oil ok, but it does have additives to help it stay mixed with the petrol, which is not needed for the moto. Some of the strimmer/chainsaw oils are quite expensive. You should get ordinary 2T two stroke oil in repsol garage or even the supermarkets (I know eroski have it).

for the tyre pressure, let me know the tyre sizes and i'll give you more exact pressures - they range from 130 kPa to 225 kPa (20psi - 32 psi) depending on tyre size!

tyres are Pirelli front 80/90 -21, rear 110/80 -18.
Looked on the Pirelli site they have a great .pdf file on all sorts of bike fitments, even show my model (MH Furia Enduro Max)but no pressures listed.

for 'load' up to 90kg (14 stone!)
front = 150 kPa (22 psi)
rear = 175 kPa (25 psi)

for load from 90 kg to max load(!)
front = 175 kPa (25 psi)
rear = 200 kPa (29 psi)

tyres should be cold when checked.

The government has approved changes to the law affecting motorcycles and scooters. From September 1, the minimum age for riding a scooter will be 15.
The cabinet met last Friday to give final approval to various initiatives regarded as urgent in improving road safety. The rise in the minimum age for scooter drivers is accompanied by an increase in the minimum age at which a driver may carry a passenger, which jumps from 16 to 18 years.
Licences already obtained by 14-year-olds before September 1 will continue to be valid after this date, but such drivers will have to observe the new age limit for carrying a passenger. New applicants will also have to pass a practical examination. Drivers whose licence has expired will not need to take the exam to obtain a new licence, provided that no more than four years has elapsed since their old licence ran out, although they will have to produce the required medical certificate. Applicants for licences to ride higher powered motor cycles will have to take separate examinations.
