We used British Airways.....try...

a lot depends on the weight of the dog as well, we found it was loads cheaper and less hassle doing it this way, we flew our dog excess baggage as less stress and guaranteed him on same plane as us

Try www.pet-couriers.com. I know a couple of people who have used them and were pleased with the price and the service. Defra approved too !
Re: Cost if flying a dog to UK, london Airport
I looked all the ways and costs of getting a dog back to the UK last year before we bought a puppy. The aeroplane option was a minimum of £1000. Ferries and car is much cheaper and I think much kinder and safer for dogs.
Re: Cost if flying a dog to UK, london Airport
We paid 140 GBP for our dog, I am sure there are cheaper ways of flying the dog, we decided it was less stressful as our dog was only away from us for 4 hours all in, including the flight time by going excess baggage, of course someone would need to fly over with the dog too that way.

Hey Jool sounds like people were trying to rip me off then!! What airline was that with? Four hours is good timing although I think my dog would be stressed in the hold on his own. I don't think I'd let someone else take him overland except maybe my mum!! I'm not sure I'd trust a stranger who was doing it for money. It will have to be a nice trip through Europe for me and the dog
Someone told me that some airlines still allow dogs in the cabin on your lap - not sure how true that is but wouldn't it be great for short flights!

I was quoted 490 first animal BA then 450 each subsequent one theres four in total so lot of money. Thomson was 450.
Jool how did you manage such a reasonable fare.
Iberia let you take small animals on board with you but they must stay in their cages either under your seat or in a rack

I think that Jool is talking about UK to Spain.
It is certainly not the same on the return flight.
Prices ARE the same across all airlines at around 470 pounds.

Some foriegn airlines allow animals to travel, whereby you pay excess baggage, so depends on the weight of your dog, not sure which of the UK airlines do it, but Jool will tell you who she/he used.

Julie......The OP is asking specificaly about taking a dog from Spain to the UK.
Read the DEFRA pets passport info and you will see that only a handful of airlines and airports can do this.
Dogs/cats etc cannot travel to the UK as excess baggage, Jool is talking of her experience many years ago bringing a dog FROM the UK to Spain not the other way around.

I don´t know for sure but my understanding is you can.......but yes I did fly my animals excess baggage from UK to Spain and it was a few years ago, have you asked Paws and other rescue organisations for info?Dogs/cats etc cannot travel to the UK as excess baggage, Jool is talking of her experience many years ago bringing a dog FROM the UK to Spain not the other way around
Re: Cost if flying a dog to UK, london Airport
As previously stated NO airline can or will fly a dog into the UK as excess baggage.
Prices a few months ago were around 500 pounds per dog.

Excess baggage does not mean in the cabin with passengers but only that the dog travels in same plane as you but in special area of cargo hold that is heated, you are NOT allowed to sedate dogs as they can die from the effects of the drug and the altitude......and you are guaranteed the animal will be on same plane as you.Monarch is happy to carry pets on our flights, under the current Pets Passport Scheme as authorised by the DEFRA. Please note:
* Carriage is subject to availability and a charge will be made for each pet carried. A maximum of 4 animals will be permitted on each flight.
* Pets can be carried from all Monarchs scheduled UK departure airports, but for the time being can only be returned via London Gatwick & Manchester.
* Animals are carried in the hold of the aircraft.
* No animals are permitted in the passenger cabin or to be carried as excess luggage.
* The carriage of ALL pets shall be conducted in accordance with the current ‘Carriage of Animals’ regulations, as published by IATA, and the Pet Passport Scheme requirements as required and published by DEFRA.

So they can only go via animal cargo and all that hassle?
Re: Cost if flying a dog to UK, london Airport
Guide dogs are free, so ask a blind friend to take the dog back.
(I'm not being deliberately provocative here. I was checking up on a company yesterday and this was a suggestion - albeit tongue-in-cheek. This company also suggests that if you are trying this with a Yorkshire terrier, you may not be believed).

2 cats to UK this summer around 850 euro or pounds can't remember. This included a discount for the second one. The cost is high because of UK laws and includes processing. Cheaper the other way and some do take them as excess baggage. We paid cerca £700 for 4 pets to the USA as there aren't the UK restrictions.
