Dead battery

Postby casita-bonita » Mon Aug 30, 2010 8:36 am

The battery on my Mercedes ML decided to pack up last week. I hear that car parts are can be silly money here in Spain so where is the best place to purchase a new battery in the Velez to Torrox area?

Is it ok just to disconnect the old battery and so remove power to the car? Obviously the clock will stop working for a while but will any of the other car electronics react badly to having power removed?
Regards

Bob

If the radio has a code then make sure you have that to hand

Hi casita-bonita,
Have you a Agri Store on the poligono :?:
Or the larger recambios (parts) Motor factors..............

From a MB forum...................
"Remember to use a battery memory saver. It just costs like $4.00 and you plug it into the accessory lighter and it will keep your computer and radio codes alive while you change your battery. Very handy. Don't forget your radio code, just in case..."

Hi,
If you're DIY a new battery make sure you get the correct spec one.

You can use a site like Varta and input your model type..............

Thanks for your replies folks. But since I posted my mate came down and we tried to jumpstart. No change so maybe the starter is broke and causing the battery voltage to drop hugely when it's engaged.

Bummer...

Now where did I put the number of the breakdown service :-)

Hi casita-bonita,

Eggs and Grandmother...........I trust your chum connected up the jump start cables correctly....

Live to live.........negative from good vehicle to a good ground on dead one.

I trust all your current cables from your battery are tight and not corroded.

Hi Enrique

Thanks for the suggestions, but we checked connections were good. Bob who came down is an ex lorry mechanic :-)

We even tried disconnecting the neg on my battery and connected the vehicle to his, just in case my battery was really broke and dragging his voltage down. No difference.

So now I'm waiting for the breakdown truck to arrive :-)

Well would you belive it. The breakdown truck came and before he towed it away we tried jump starting again. Since he couldn't manouvre his truck into a place where the leads would reach we tried jumping from our Smart car.. Using his jump leads and with some black box of his connected accross the battery the Merc started from the tiny Smart battery.

So looks pretty conclusive that my battery is broken.

Ain't life strange some times :-)

Back to finding a battery shop.

I have now bought two new batteries; one heavy duty for my LR Discovery. I found Eroski to have the best range and price.

Watch for the polarity as the poles of the posts can change sides on different batteries. This was critical to my Disco as the clamp fitted along to front edge of the battery and because of the raised section for the electrolite filling, the battery would only fit one way.

All Eroski batteries are filled and charged.

Hi SL,
Would imagine the M Class uses something around the 100Ah so will be expensive.
