Dog Worming Law

Postby Lyric » Tue Dec 14, 2010 6:04 pm

I've just done a search, and know the answer is in here but .....

We have just had the beast have her annual jab for things various, and the vet has advised us about the new law requiring the treatment to be carried out once annually by the vet and the book stamped. He was a little unclear about which April this came/comes into law.

We only did her last month so declined but need to know. Already in force from last April or due this April ?

It's already in force. It applies to cats as well.

It is in place to reduce the risk of transfer of diseases from animals to humans - like rabies.

For Scrabble fans these diseases are called zoonoses.

Hi Lyric,
Was down the vets for the annual shots.........no mention of anything new.

Finally got Pets Passport ....exactly a year from the first Rabies jab.........had to have a second shot after the first test failed.

Not sure what El Cid is on about..........Rabies jab is either annual in Spain or three years in UK

Worming tablet every three months, and tick , flea , Mozzie and Sandfly drops every month.

You wonder how the local dogs survive with none of the above......... :?:

It is the new law which now insists that the animal is wormed as well as jabbed every year and the details put in the passport.

UK law is irrelevant.

Hi El Cid,
Thanks for that link..........

Will take it up with my vet.

I was only pointing out that the UK Rabies jab is valid for three years and they (UK) are the only ones that check the Pets Passport on entry.

...and what about many of the Spanish owned dogs which never see a vet from one year to the next or the proliferation of strays that plague every town, village and rural area and which the police studiously ignore when driving past them and who shrug their shoulders when you try to pass on information about packs of strays?

Who is going to make sure that they have a passport and are wormed and jabbed every year? The dogs, I mean, not the police although there again...

Just looked at our Jack Russell's UK pet passport with the rabies shot treatment date (in UK) as April 2010 and expiry April 2012. So to be legal now that she's living in Spain she will have to have a booster in April 2011 I guess?

Yes, if you want to be legal in spain. You can also get the vet to change the details on the microchip to your spanish address.

My dogs have always been wormed every 3 months &details recorded & stamped on their books / passports for the last 9 years.

Thanks. The mandatory annual worming treatment: is that just for tapeworm?

Hi,
Ran this past my vet this evening.........her take on it..........

For "new" dogs/cats the Green Andalucía book is replaced by the Blue Pets Passport so entries go in that.

Worming is every three months and is recorded on via the computer to the Andalucía Database, optional to write in Pets Passport.

Rabies booster is annual if the dogs/cat reside in Spain.

Interesting that the OP's vet wasn't sure of the new regulation..........makes it difficult for us owners to keep legal.

As Beach points out who is going to check this ..........many of the people in the campo villages have 10 or more dogs that have never seen a vet.

The OP's vet I'm sure understood the situation perfectly, the problem was the OP i.e. me who didn't follow. Lost in translation you see.

The particular parasite that they are worried about is Echinococosis

Thanks Sid, We are taking her to the vet later this morning, the first visit so he won't know her history, what should we ask him for with respect to the worming requirement. (Not sure if he speaks English so the Spanish term would be helpful).
