Train up to Ronda from near Gib.
Many years ago we went up this route, and would like to go again next visit.
Is it still operating?
I think we boarded at a station a few up from Algeceras, but can't remember where that was.
As a side point when travelling in that area by car, I can vaugley picture a place that was a river valley/gorge full of largish boulders where you could do a nice walk. Anyone know where I'm thinking of. (could be loads of places I guess)
Edit... Could it have been Jubrique?
Another edit... could be where the road from Gaucin to Cortez de la Frontera crosses the Guadiaro??

We did a trip once from Ronda, the coach picked us up from the train at San Roque. Fantastic scenery.

To answer your first question, yes trains do run between Algeciras and Ronda. Three local trains per day which continue to Granada. Additionally there are two trains that call at Ronda en route to Madrid.
Take a look at http://www.renfe.com/

Yes! I live in Cortes......down by the station
As said before, the best place to catch the train near Gib is San Roque (it's about a 20 Euro taxi fare from the Gib border). If you get off at El Colmenar (aka Estación Gaucin) you can walk/scramble the spectacular gorge (with its large boulders!!! ) You'll end up near the station of Cortes de la Frontera and that is where the Gaucin/Cortes road crosses the Guadiaro.

Re: Train up to Ronda from near Gib.
Thanks Trooper. Just the info I needed.
I won't be based in Gib, but near San Ped.
I think i'll just drive to El colmenar and go up the valley as far as me little legs will get me, or even all the way to Cortez. How long would it take to walk from El Colmenar to the Cortez river crossing? (one way) Then I could get the train back just the one stop.
Is Cortez a nice place to visit.?

Re: Train up to Ronda from near Gib.
Thanks again Troop.
Blimey, I asked about the walk and next thing I know, there's a video posted. Brilliant. It can't have been too strenuous as they didn't have tampons on their boots.
The video led me to www.secretandalucia.com which is v good.
It seems there are two trains in the late afternoon and evening for the 12 min journey back from Cortez to Gaucin, but I still don't know how long it would take to walk up (unless you've answered that in the other post)

No I don't know how long it would take. I couldn't do it...which is why I call it a scramble rather than a walk. Beyond my abilities I'm afraid. I guess at 4 hours
Look at your other posts - the Jimera to Benajoan walk is do-able. Even I've done it ..........and the lunch is most satisfying

At Benaoján Estación there is a nice restaurant at the end of the platform called El Muelle - it was originally a railway building. I would just get off the train, forget the walk to Jimera along the valley and have a long lunch, then get the next train home.

Thanks Flan
Yes the idea of a long lazy lunch is appealing... but I'm the irritating sort of person that can't relax for too long. Drives OH mad. I have to just go and have a look round the next corner. Next thing you know you've done a 5 mile hike. I've got to the age where I'm forcing myself to do things just to keep the wheels in motion.

Re: Train up to Ronda from near Gib.
Hi again Troop
Been off the pewter sulking over Villa's 4-2 defeat to Chelsea, and the news that our captain, Stylian Petrov, has been diagnosed with acute leukaemia.
Anyway what I think I'll do is drive to Jimera de Libar, take the train up to Benaojen, have something to eat and walk back.
I just need to confirm the time of the train as I've seen a bit of contradictory info.
If I've got it right, for a weekday the train leaves Jimera at 13.03 and takes 6/7 mins to get to Benaojen. If I decide, after a good lunch, not to walk back the train down is at 16.40
If anyone would like to join me on this walk, probably on Monday 30th of April, get in touch

Re: Train up to Ronda from near Gib.
My timetable (horario) is a year old but it is as you say, viz: 13.03 at Jimera getting to Benajoan at 13.11.
When they change timetable (usually twice per year) the timings are usually only marginally different, but I will pop down to the station to get an updated one. Ironically, as the line was re-developed a few years ago (and even re-built in places) the upshot was fewer trains!.....so I don't suppose "your" one will be removed from the schedule - they've already been ridiculed enough!

Re: Train up to Ronda from near Gib.
You can check the timetable on-line. A quick check shows the train times haven't changed from the ones you quote.
