Fridge part of fridge/freezer not working
Fridge part of fridge/freezer not working
We have a Daewoo american style fridge freezer. The past 2 days we heard a banging noise quite often, whilst working, then last night, noticed the items in the fridge were no longer being cooled.
I have this morning, took the back of of it and vacuumed/cleaned the dust off from inside.
I have turned it back on, and the knocking noise has stopped....but it is still not cooling the food.
Has anyone any other ideas as to what this could be before i call someone out?
Also, i bought it from carrefor. Does anyone know how long guarantees usually are? I bought it around 3 years ago.
Thanks for any info.
Karen

Re: Fridge part of fridge/freezer not working
We had a similar problem a few years ago when we lived in the UK,the gas had leaked out.The engineer took it away, fixed the leak and recharged the gas.It worked perfectly after the repair and was a lot cheaper than replacing.

It may just be the thermostat IDE try that first

Guarantees on white goods are generally for a minimum of 2 years.
Re: Fridge part of fridge/freezer not working
The stat is behind your dial that sets the temp.

Re: Fridge part of fridge/freezer not working
Thanks for replies. The temp is displayed on a digital display on the front of the freezer side, no dial inside.
How would i know if it is working okay (whats IDE?)
It is set to -17 for freezer and +7 for fridge as usual.
Thanks.

Re: Fridge part of fridge/freezer not working
Buy a cheap fridge thermometer and check the temperature. It should be -18c in the freezer and 5c in the fridge.karandjon wrote: How would i know if it is working okay

Sorry I should have said I would.
Have you tried a good old fashioned whack sometimes helps. Maybe a look at the handbook that came with the freezer will help. Also have you tried adjusting the settings? With it being a digital display it maybe that a board has gone down. Have you tried turning it off for a few hours. Sorry just saying what I would do before calling an engineer. As Sid says we have a plastic ball in ours and if temp is ok I turns blue.

Re: Fridge part of fridge/freezer not working
Thanks for replies. I put a thermomemeter in the fridge side, and it said 15 degrees! You can actually feel its not cooling also.
I can't turn it off as the opposite side is the long freezer full of food and it would turn that off too! The freezer is working fine.
There is nothing to suggest what to do in the manual.
No 'hitting' the FF has been undertaken...yet!
Have tried adjusting the temperature from 7 to 6degs on the digital display but still nothing.
Do you think maybe the fan has gone on the compressor? would i be able to tell by putting a portable fan to blow on it and if it then cools, i would know that is the problem, or does that sound just stupid?

Re: Fridge part of fridge/freezer not working
Found this for you.
Check the back wall or floor of the freezer section for frost. Check the freezer( evaporator) fan to see if it is running. Check the condenser coils( under the unit ) for blockage from dust. Check the condenser fan (under the unit) to see if it is running.
If you have frost in the freezer there is a problem with the defrost system and the freezer will start to warm eventually as well as the fresh food section. If that is the problem you can check the defrost terminator, defrost heater/s, and the defrost timer or adaptive defrost control If used on your unit or the main control board if so equipped. These things usually require dismantling the freezer and other areas of the refrigerator to be checked.
You could defrost the freezer by disconnecting the power to the refrigerator and letting it sit for at least 24 hours with BOTH DOORS WIDE OPEN to allow the frost to melt completely but it will build up again in 1-2 weeks and start the warming up again.

Thanks swerve, but our freezer is a frost free one.

Get someone in.
Re: Fridge part of fridge/freezer not working
I agree with swerve. Find someone to house your frozen food and switch off the fridge / freezer for 24 hours then switch back on. If that doesn't work - get someone in.
(Or you could let it all rot and claim off the insurance)

Re: Fridge part of fridge/freezer not working
My daughter had a fridge/freezer which had a similar problem I.e. the freezer was fine but the fridge not. Engineer called and all that was needed was a defrost, despite it being "frost free".
Basically, the cooling system cooled the freezer and cold sir from the freezer then dropped though channels into the fridge to call that. Somehow water had got into those channels and frozen, thus blocking them.
Apparently a common reason for that happening is food in the freezer blocking the channels.
I would find someone to store your frozen food then defrost it. Once completed, turn it back on and see if it works.
Assuming it does, be careful when you repack the freezer that you don't block any vents.
It may not be the reason for your problem but worth a try. If you get an engineer out, whether under warranty or not, and he takes it away you are going to lose your frozen stuff anyway.
It worked for my daughter.

Re: Fridge part of fridge/freezer not working
Well swerve, this worked a treat, thanks!! I am a bit worried about the 'happening again in 1-2 weeks'' tho! I heard a few 'bangs' as it were, last night already, tho we have a thermomenter ij there now and it is cooling fine.swerve wrote:

Would you suggest getting an engineer out now, whilst it is working, or wait for it to conk out again?
Many thanks,

Re: Fridge part of fridge/freezer not working
No just keep an eye on it. And every say 3 months give it a defrost. Just cos there frost free doesn't mean that they don't need a defrost every now and then. Glad you got sorted.

Re: Fridge part of fridge/freezer not working
Just make sure the vents in the freezer and the fridge don't get covered with food (bags of frozen peas are a common culprit). Cold air from the freezer needs to be able to get to the fridge.

Re: Fridge part of fridge/freezer not working
Well done. No need to call an engineer. Just keep checking nothing is blocking the air-flow. Freezers are more economical if they are full but not overfull!

Re: Fridge part of fridge/freezer not working
Thanks so much guys. I will remember all of that. And yes, i had actually overfilled the freezer recently, as had made batches of baby food and was stacking them up in there! I will ensure the vents are kept clear from now on.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.
