Bringing up old threads
Re: Bringing up old threads
"El Cid" quoted me ...
''I think one or two members are worried that someone might revive an old thread that could upset them.?'''
And Sid then added.....
How do you arrive at that conclusion?
Katy just asked if it was possible and commented that some forums did so.
Well....That was just my thoughts 'reading between the lines', personally I can't see why anyone would be worried, or even slightly interested in closing old chapters, and I personally think that Sid and BC have got much more interesting things to be doing on a hot summers day..
Regards,
Gordon....

But what if that information is now out of date?White Horse wrote:If a thread has not had a post after 1 year it could be locked.
The information within it is still available, as long as they are not deleted, I can't see a problem.
As anybody who lives here in Spain knows, rules and regulations change and some threads need periodic updating.

Re: Bringing up old threads
As I said earlier, it can be done automatically.Chunky Monky wrote:
Not to mention the work involved, would the locking have to be done manually or could A.com devise a system that would automatically lock posts that were older than the prescribed time limit?
Locking old threads won't stop spammers.
.
One email from me and it's done.
Nothing will stop spammers but they are much more obvious if they post a new thread than if they latch onto an old one.
You would be amazed how many spam posts I delete and remove the spammer from the forum within an hour of them posting!
Some are very devious. I had one a week ago where someone joins under two names and one asks for recommendation and the alter ego answers.
Easy to spot as I can cross check all IP addresses.

Re: Bringing up old threads
I don't really care one way or another about past threads and cant be bothered explaining what I meant. I have just about given up on posting on forums unless I want to ask a question and even then I think several times before posting and sometimes after ! Too much hassle comes out of nowhere at times and frequently people do not seem to understand me or misunderstand. I think I must be going mad in my marble tower.El Cid wrote:ValL wrote: I think there may be a few upset members if their precious thread was locked.
If no one has posted to it for say two years it can't really be too precious can it?

What was the result in the end? Are they locked or not.

No, they are not locked. It is possible, but it is nearly a year since the issue was raised and we haven't had any problems since.

And now Mark you will probably be accused of bringing up 'old threads'....

Re: Bringing up old threads
The potential for confusion is still there. Supposing someone's search term turned up an old tax/health thread and they didn't notice it was dated 2005 here is an example, I was able to edit one of my posts from 2005, only a spelling mistake but any poster could go on and change all their postsEl Cid wrote:No, they are not locked. Re: Bringing up old threads
It must be worth considering deleting (or archiving in a hidden forum) all posts before, say 2010.

Re: Bringing up old threads
OK, I will close all threads over two years old. They will still remain readable and if anyone wants to contribute to them, they will need to start a new thread referencing the old one.

Re: Bringing up old threads
Let me clarify - all threads that have not had a post for 2 years will close.
So the word thread will remain open.
