Car Transportation

Postby BellaFay » Mon May 11, 2015 9:31 pm

Hi again!

I'm hoping to move to Velez Malaga later this year and am still doing a lot of research so I hope I bore anyone to tears - I'm a newbie and need loads of advice

I saw a couple of threads about transporting a car to Spain. I have had quotes in and around the £800 mark but I think that's expensive. I'm bringing over my 2003 Renault Megan so its not a flash car or anything but I'm used to it.

Any ideas on cheaper transporters?

Are there people who drive cars over, like as a service, to save on their costs for example?

Hi BellaFay.

Welcome to The Forum............. :D

Best option would be sell it before you leave and buy in Spain. Unless its LHD......... :?:

1) Otherwise the light clusters will need changing to LHD units.
2) From the year it sounds like a Megane II , unless it has a great FSH record these models can be a problem with their electric everything.

Drive it down yourself and see some great parts of Spain on the way.............

No disrespect to your car but driving a 2003 car 1500 miles to Spain will probably kill it. Driving little journeys along the coast you could get a good few years more use from the car.

Hi costakid,

"driving a 2003 car 1500 miles to Spain will probably kill it"..........you can't be serious........

If the guy is happy with his car then spending a few euro to get it onto Spanish plates is the way to go.

Enrique, Yes I am serious. Lots of short to medium journeys and his car will last for years. A journey like will do more harm than good.
I know what I'm talking about. You do NOT.

Absolute tosh! My car is 22 years old and I would drive it back to England wirhout any hesitation, as for me however, I might be a trifle stiff!.

I never said it was cast in stone that it wouldn't make the journey just that old cars on motorways for hours are prone to over heating. Old parts fail. The guy make take the B roads and do the journey over 5 days then it is less likely to fail. I personally get on the motorway and get here as quick as legally possible. That I wouldn't do in an old car. I was only giving him my advice.

Well lets hope i don't see you in your 22 year old car on the hard shoulder late at night in the rain.

Well ... Great debate but first I should point out that I'm female

The car is a Renault Megane Cabriolet 1.6 16V Fidji 2d with 77,000 on the clock. I'm really kind of attached to it and I'm moving to Spain from the UK without any knowledge on cars which is the reason for the enquiry. If its too old to drive then can you suggest a less expensive exporter?

Once it arrives, what is the protocol? I have no idea about plates, lights, tax, insurance etc. :? However I would like to hang onto it for a while until I get used to my surroundings.

F!

Hi BellaFay,
Renault Megane Cabriolet 1.6 16V Fidji 2d, is a Megane I, this model is bomb proof, I have one(1.6 Hatch) in my garage, done loads of trips to and from Spain, Santander to Jaén Province. Cruises at the legal limit on the Motorway all day, have done the trip in one day but usually have a stop now due to the ferry landing times. Its all Motorway so a good intro to driving on the right.
Getting round Madrid is easy on the M-50 and R-4, 30 mins from north side to south side. Loads of nice small service areas/stops on the way down.
Brittany-Ferries have two boats now running the Economy Service, one to Santander and the other to Bilbao .

Even cheaper.................

With only 77K on the clock I would have no hesitation in driving to Spain in it. My old Citroen BX clocked up 200K when touring around France and Spain.

So having got the car to Andalucía I now find myself with another problem. I reached out to enquire about legalising the car in Spain and this was what I received:-

"We would require a copy of the Log Book of the vehicle in order to offer you a breakdown of statutory and tax fees to pay to the Spanish Authorities. Our fees are 350 euros"

REALY :wtf: :wtf:

Is it really that expensive to register a car??? It's just paperwork for goodness sake!

And you will have to change the lights  and possibly some rear light (depending on your model) and I'm sure there will be more sand put in your vaseline as well   . And after all that you will have a car with the steering wheel on the wrong side. Dont do it. Drive it for six months (legally) and then sell it or send it back to the UK.

It would be useful if you put your intended location here in Andalucia in your profile then someone can advice you on a local gestor to do the transfer at a reasonable cost.
Yes, you do need the log book of the car and yes, the transfer costs money.
It might just be filling out a bit of paper but that costs money, unless you have the time, patience and knowledge to do it all yourself you can cut out the gestor but there are still transfer fees, ITV inspection etc. headlight changes, rear light changes etc. which all cost money.
Sorry if all this sounds a bit negative but that is how things work in Spain.
Sunshine and a general more laid back lifestyle are free.

OK, I missed that  . Just looked at the absent location in the profile.
If she is moving to Velez Malaga then I highly recommend Martin's, as a gestor who specialises in car transfers, on the main road opposite the Saturday market in Caleta de Velez.

In fairness if a Spaniard moved to the UK it would be the same. Wrong headlamps, speedo and rear fog light. You need to fill in a V55 which is not easy if your not English 1st language, get a VCA certificate £80 ish plus 1st reg fee of £55. Then an mot test and road tax. Not cheap all of this.
