Hello all,
I shall be coming to the costa del sol in the next couple of months and only have an old style paper driving licence, do I need (or is it advisable to get ) a photo driving licence, I was thinking of when I rent or buy a car, or indeed if I get spot checked by the police.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Driving licence
It is best if you apply for a Photocard Licence as the Paper One is no longer Legal and will fall away if any of your personal details have been changed.

Re: Driving licence
Hi
I'm in the same boat and I'm going through this procedure at the moment. You have to have a medical at one of the approved centres. First I had to do a hand/eye coordination test (a bit tricky!) and then went through to see the doctor who took my weight and height, checked blood pressure, checked eyesight and asked some questions about my health. Then I've arranged an appointment with one of the local places who sorts out paperwork and I've got to take my medical certificate, 2 passport photos, NIE, Residencia, passport and proof of address. They charge 100 euros and the medical was 40 euros. I think the new licence takes a few weeks to come through.

Re: Driving licence
I have a UK old style paper licence. Stopped last year by Gaudia and was accepted without a problem.

Re: Driving licence
An old licence is not valid if you are a resident. The law has just changed and as the paper licences are valid until age 70, they now HAVE to be exchanged for a Spanish licence. Photocard licences are valid for 10 years, so they comply with the new rules.
Non residents can still use them on the basis that if they are valid in the UK they are valid here.

Re: Driving licence
I am well aware of that and I was not suggesting you were not.
It is important that people are aware that the old licences can create problems if you are resident as the law has just changed.
