Right to permanent residency...

Postby rafiki » Fri Jun 24, 2016 6:38 pm

We have lived here permanently for more than five years but haven't had our residency certs updated to indicate the right to permanent residency. In the light of today's referendum result would it be advisable to have the certs updated or is that not necessary?

Strictly speaking it isn't necessary as the fact that you can prove that you have been here legally for 5 years gives you the right of permanent residency under EU law. The fact that the UK will not be in the EU is not relevant because Spain is and they have to abide by EU law.

For the sake of piece of mind you can easily get a new certificate, but it will cost you the normal fee.

In Spain I always work on the premise that if there is the option to have a piece of official paper or not to I get it.
