What to bring with you.....

Postby IreneD » Tue Sep 06, 2016 2:07 pm

.......when you move to Spain. I would say oven gloves, hot water bottles, Anthisan, Winter clothes. You can of course get those things here (or similar) but I've never found a better anti bite cream than Anthisan and I can't find oven gloves. What would you recommend a new immigrant brings with them?

Forget about hot water bottles, electric blankets much better, wool jumpers, most of your furniture, rugs to keep your feet warm in the winter,no central heating and tiled floors can be very cold in the winter.

I just bought some oven gloves from Casa in El Ingenio. They are the individual ones but very thick and good quality (and they were on offer). I have been looking for a new pair for about a year!

Bring your Brit plated car in case it don't work out. You can head off home without the headache of selling your Spanish car that was over priced when you bought it.

Ooh, thanks, Wicksey, I'll have a look, we are going there tomorrow. I did see them there a while ago but they were about 8 euros each glove, as I recall. Otherwise, I'll get my daughter to bring the normal double type gloves.

A good supply of patience.
Sometimes you will need it for when you have to deal with officialdom.
Cheers

Agree with Anthisan, nothing better for mossie bites. And oven gloves though we still have Ikea ones we brought with us. Gallons of Henderson's Relish even though it can be ordered online ( unless you are from the South Yorkshire area, you will not know how vital this is !) Men's shoes - how Spanish men get their feet into Spanish shoes I will never know. Boot's dental picks and styptic pencils, all Lakeland products you never thought you could live without.

The good part of not having all our favourite things available, is the project to source them and buy them and make sure they are delivered. Keeps the brain active !

A return airline ticket so you can quickly get back to booming post Brixit UK and not get left behind in the moribund EU.

Seeds for chillie plants if you like proper curry.
Your favourite curry powder.
Access to a UK VPN or whatever so you can get TMS
Bisto gravy granules. My spanish family love them and I have to bring them over whenever I go back to blightie.
As many of your favourite tea bags as possible. In foil bags the're great for packing around delicate things.
M&S knickers, the're also great for packing around delicate things
And my Spanish wife would say Clark's shoes.

Nothing else we can think of but blightie is only 3 hours away :D

All available easily here even the knickers, M&S do good mail order.
I would say clothes, my wife seems to have trouble with Jeans and Shorts that are not skin tight or minute, she is an 8 which seems to qualify her as a teenager rather than a pensioner.

I always put bangers from Marks and Spencer and Cadbury's chocolate into my suitcase when I visit the UK. Clothes and shoes tend to be the same here and there. El Corte ingles is almost exactly the same as John Lewis.

With a couple of English supermarkets not too far away and Iceland in Fuengirola (that sells some Waitrose things) we cope pretty well for those odd British foods we miss, although there's not that much these days. I do like Pataks' curry sauces but can get them locally without any problem. I miss the flavour of rhubarb and when in the UK do eat anything that has it in it, like yoghurts, and always buy good quality 'proper' smoked ham.

Irene, the oven gloves were down to 3.99 each and are the dark blue and white ones. Not sure if the had the double ones. They were with a number of other items in the same all reduced.

You can get excellent smoked ham here. Look for "Westphalian" ham on the bone.

Cannot disagree with that, it's delicious with 2 fried eggs and a little English mustard  Sadly not many places do carveable Roast beef though.

It certainly is available in certain places but in small quantities and at a price. Yes you might see them on offer occasionally but up to four times the price!!

As for knickers and shoes by mail order  my wife would shoot me

The larger 450gr jar of Pataks (which gives us 4 servings) is 2.95€ in our local English shop. I make my own chutney and buy Lidls' own naan breads (2 large for 1.19) when they have Asian week, so pretty cheap for a curry night!

I know it is more than UK prices for things here but then they have to import them and have everything re-labled to include Spanish labelling etc, so you can't expect to get things for the same prices. As long as you don't want to get loads of UK branded foods, then it is OK for odd things.

Sid where do you buy "Westphalian" ham on the bone? Is it from the deli counter of the bigger supermarkets?

Wicksey, couldn't see the ones you describe. They had one grey glove at 2 euros 99 ..............but only one, so that's no good. Other gloves were 5.99 and upwards. My daughter is coming over soon, I must remember to ask her to bring me some.
