Crisp bag potential explosion mid flight
Crisp bag potential explosion mid flight
the story goes summat like this ... I was flying back from the UK yesterday evening ... in my handbag I had a packet of chia seed crisps (chia seeds seem to be the new superfood and even Mercadona has started selling them) ... halfway through the flight I noticed the packet had inflated, seemingly to maximum capacity ... and looked likely to explode any moment ... I thought that if it did explode, it would cause a major panic among passengers who did not know that the noise was coming from an inocuous crisp packet ... carrying my handbag very carefully I slowly made my way to speak with the cabin crew and ask them what I should do! They just laughed at me and said it would deflate as the plane descended to land at Malaga! now I have 2 questions ... ?would it have exploded eventually? ... and what caused the bag to inflate? ... and maybe airlines should give warning not to carry crisp packets onboard .. ?!
Re: Crisp bag potential explosion mid flight
The air pressure inside the cabin is maintained to the equivalent of somewhere between 6 to 8 thousand feet, so a medium mountain. Do crisp packets explode up mountains ? probably not.
They inflate because they are sealed at roundabout sea level so the pressure inside the bag is greater than that in the cabin in the cruise, therefore the bag expands.
I hope that is clear.

It happened to me when I have bought a meal deal at the airport. I got the crisps out and couldn’t believe how the bag at blown up. I slowly opened one corner and deflated the packet.

Our water bottles do the same. They go 'phut' when we open them when we are up in the air and as we come down to land they implode (as by then we have drunk most of the water so are almost empty). I have also noticed it with crisp packets too but we just opened them without incident! Does the same happen to our bodies??

Lyric: thanks for the info re air pressure ... not sure I understand but thanks for trying to explain to me!
White Horse ... very funny response!
I did not dare to try to open/deflate the packet myself as it looked at maximum capacity and one wrong move could have been disatrous!

If there was an armed air marshal on board it could all go horribly wrong!
