Seed Tray Protection from the Sun

Postby Dunflittin68 » Sat Apr 08, 2017 3:37 pm

We have just moved into a villa which has a very sunny terrace until late afternoon. I love to grow marigolds and tomatoes etc., but am finding it difficult to keep them shielded from the hot sun at the moment. Can I leave them in another shaded spot all day or does anyone have suggestions on how to shield the seeds, i.e. can they be covered up with say newspaper etc.? Anyone have the same problems ?

?maybe construct some sort of curved screen which would let light through but protect from full sun?

Had a brainwave, put the sun umbrella up which covered most of the trays which hopefully kept the direct sun off although the trays were getting a bit warm. Happily there has been a breeze today which has kept them a bit cooler but it does mean keep moving the brolly around the terrace as the sun moves over

Just put them in the shade. They only need warmth for germination not sunlight.

Seed germination

Moisture Salinity Heat Contrary to popular belief on how to germinate seeds, sunlight is not a standard factor that influences seed germination (unless otherwise stated on the seed packet). In fact, sunlight can do more harm than good, as it may overheat the seeds and seedlings, killing them.

I never knew that sunlight is not essential to seed germination. I will put them in the shade and hopefully they will be happy little seeds ! :) I have noticed that in the sun here they dry out about 6 times a day

I use electric heat mats indoors and put them out when they are seedlings. You can get a 50% shade cloth at any agriculture store, check the poligono.
