I hope that this may help those of you like us who are planning on travelling to Spain with their dogs. We found that there was limited kennels available on the ferries travelling to Spain (booked up months in advance), so ended up driving through France to Spain (Andalucia).
I have included our route, fuel and toll costs, as well as the dog friendly hotels we used.

We're going the other way soon with one cat. The pet cabins on the Bilbao - Portsmouth route certainly book up well in advance, and we originally had to book from Le Havre - but we checked some time later and luckily there had been a cancellation, so it does pay to check occasionally. Brittany Ferries have a useful online chat facility on their website and they're very helpful. You can change your booking at no cost (except obviously any difference in fares)
As the sailing is around 5:00 pm and we have to check in a couple of hours before, we figured we'd leave Málaga around midnight and have a very leisurely drive through the night, but for the sake of an overnight stop en-route it seemed a bit silly, so we've now booked a room for €70 (including breakfast for the humans) at pet-friendly Hotel Alisa in Lerma (near Burgos), so we'll leave around midday instead, and have an even more leisurely morning before the sailing, with probably less than two hours drive left to Bilbao.

If we could have done that we would in a flash - I love the ease of the ferry from Spain to the UK. The problem for us that it is a one dog per cabin and although we kept checking there was no way we were going to get lucky enough to have 2 cancellations. If nothing else it was an experience we would otherwise have missedMiro wrote:We're going the other way soon with one cat. Hi,
You need to do the Santander to UK route on the Pont-Aven as they have more Kennels .
Also if it seems full (on-line booking) a phone call can sometime secure a kennel or two.

I can thoroughly recommend Hotel Alisa at Lerma (just south of Burgos) http://www.hotelalisa.com/index.html
Very nice, and reasonably priced.
Nice touch by Brittany Ferries - a goodie bag for pets. Except that our cat was NOT impressed with the dog bone, poo bags, doggie treats and frisbee. 14 pet cabins on board - 13 occupied by dogs, but even so...
