Attempted burglary ?

Postby chrissiehope » Sun Apr 23, 2017 10:39 pm

My daughter in law spent a week at the casa over Easter. Between when she left on the Wednesday, and the gardener arrived on the Thursday, the door to the external lavadero was damaged and a padlock was on the floor. The gardener contacted me to tell me - I don't know where the padlock came from, or how much damage has been done to the door, but I have asked for photos of the damage. I have also asked the gardener if he thinks anything is missing, but haven't heard back yet.

My step daughter is suggesting we report this to the police, but I'm not sure there is any point - it was probably an attempt at burglary, but if it turns out nothing is missing I son't think the police will be interested. I'm not planning on claiming on the insurance, so won't need a crime number or similar

I'd be interested on your opinions :-)

Could be worth reporting it just so the police are aware of burglaries, even if only attempted, in the area of your casa.

You can make a denucia via the telephone but "Once the telephone report/complaint is made, complainants will have 48 hours to ratify and sign it as correct at the police station or their choice"
So somebody needs to be in Spain.

Thanks guys - I won't be in Spain until the end of May :-( I have a friend in the village and have asked her to take a look & also possibly contact the police. I've now had the photos from the gardener, and it looks like an opportunist attempt. One panel of the aluminium door has been bashed out, and the Keter storage box padlock was smashed off (taking the plastic fixing with it). Neither the lavadero nor the storage box had anything of value in & nothing seems to have been taken. One slight mystery is that apparently there is no sign on the fence of a forcible entry....

Best if you report it. Police should be aware.

I spoke with a friend who lives in the village (English, but very inegrated ;-) ) who said the police can't/won't do anything - I believe her, especially as nothing appears to have been taken ! A few years ago someone apparently tried to break into the main house - again, they failed and nothing was taken !

Perhaps nothing was taken but as you said "One panel of the aluminium door has been bashed out, and the Keter storage box padlock was smashed off". So criminal damage had been done so the police should accept the denuncia and log the incident.

I will see what my friend says - as I won't be there she would be the one to make the denuncia...

It would be interesting to see if they take it seriously - fingerprints etc or if they just brush it off and tell you to get an alarm or a dog....

It's probably too late for fingerprints, as the door panel has been repaired - the gardener (who found the damage & reported it to me) went to the Guardia Civil, but they want me to go in person which is tricky as I live in UK ! I will be in Spain at the end of May, but nowhere near the casa - I may visit it briefly, but whether I'll have the time (or the inclination) to go & spend who knows how long in a police station is debatable... ;-)
