Hi All
Our water supply is from a well, and recently we have had a 7,000 litre deposito installed so that we have a buffer in these summer months when there is not much water coming from the well. So for clarity's sake, the water from our taps in the house comes from the deposito, which then in turn draws water from the well; and if needed, the deposito can be replenished by us buying water from our friendly local farmer.....
We don't drink the well / deposito water, and use it for batheing, the dishwasher, and the washing machine - for everything else we use bottled water
It crosses our minds however, particularly since we are away every so often for three or four weeks at a time in the UK, that we should perhaps add 'something' to the deposito water to avoid it 'going off'. I've probably not explained this very well, but any thoughts would welcomed......
Thank you all in advance
Regards
Vincent

So long as it is covered and no light can get in, it should be OK. If in doubt, use a small amount of Chlorine granules like you put in a pool. It will be safe to drink, but it might taste a bit.
We have a very large deposito (200m3) and in winter it might not be refilled for four months and we have never had a problem.

Our deposito is made of concrete blocks and above ground , looks like a bungalow without windows , holds about 35,000 ltrs so lasts around 10 months , been in 15 years and we have never had any problems but like you we use it only for bathing , washing machine , washing dishes etc , never added anything to it and when i go down inside it all it has as a very thin layer of soil over the base , probably because we added a 20cm high wall around the outer edge of the top to trap rain water which runs into it , Fuente water for boiling and bottled water for drinking .

Simple tricks to avoid any excess light getting in is to add an extra shade on top of the cistern. Can be something simple like a pergola with a dark shade cloth (or two).
Also consider taping some aluminum foil on the top if it has a flat surface (will reflect most of the direct sunlight and reduce temperature = less algae).
Both are particularly important if the cistern is made of plastic.

I wonder if Puritabs are still available - we used to use them with what we thought might be dodgy water travelling in a camper in Greece and Turkey. A VERY small number of them did for a big quantity of water. Not used them for years now - incidentally you can take a sample of your water to your local Analysis Office in town and ask them to test it for drinkability - mineral content, bacteria present, moulds, etc. You may even find it is drinkable!
