Postby Unicorn » Fri Jun 30, 2017 3:53 pm

Just putting some planters on the window sill
What flowers would stand all day sun & a lot of wind in their own pots
Would that be geraniums?

How about these :)

I'm quite tempted as our own pot plants need watering twice a day now and they are in the shade!

Full sun: look into xeriscaping plants like cactii and what not. If you move the plants away from the sun and wind you have more options. Also consider an automatic irrigation system, there are some really cheap ones at Leroy Merlin.

Geraniums will survive full sun and wind.

We've got some the 'wild' geraniums (taken from cuttings from those that grow outside abandoned fincas around here) but the ones we planted out the front of our plot are really struggling and look quite sad being blasted with the heat coming up from the land below. I can't understand how the ones that are completed unattended look so lush and full of flowers and ours look half dead.

We find the geraniums with the shiny more succulent leaves fair better for us.... or perhaps they are a different variety from the ones with the rounder, slightly hairier leaves. Beware of the brown moth that have also attacked some of ours ... is there something we should use to deter them?

I think the "succulent" ones you are talking about are trailing geraniums. We have some that are 14 years old and still going strong. The "normal" regal geraniums tend to have a shorter life and need a more comfortable environment.

The brown moth is a killer as it lays its eggs and the small caterpillar eats the plant and can destroy it. They need to be sprayed at least every three weeds with a suitable insecticide. I use a systemic insecticide which acts for a few weeks or more. Confidor is the best, but it is difficult to find now, but any other systemic is fine. Avoid the small phials of insecticide designed for the geranium fly as they are just overpriced repackaging of the cheaper option. Find a good garden center and see what they have to offer.

When you use insecticides you should change type every time you use it as the insects tend to adapt quickly. Bacillus thuringesis is a great biological agent that works against caterpillars, safe to use for humans and pets.
