banger

Postby wollie » Fri Jun 30, 2017 11:55 am

My next neighbor in Spain is selling his old banger that is 27 years old.
I have a few questions so hopefully someone here will know.
Is it pretty straightforward to just buy?
Are there different companies that insure vintage cars?
Is it necessary to join a vintage club?
I did see an old thread some 10 years old and some of the links
not work and anyway the info likely out of date.

Hi woolie,
First off its a classic car...... :D
Is it road legal........with all documents............ :?:

What is the make and model........ :?:

If its not road legal you may have to get it registered with H (Historical) plates........dfx could be your man here.

Enrique,

This car was in everyday use until about a month ago so it will have everything up to date.
Its a small citroen, that's all i know.
I expect it will have the original plates.
I only left Spain on Wed and i am sorry now i did not just buy it.
I can get a friend to pay for it if i get the right advise here.

Is a 27 year old Citroen a classic car or is it just an old banger and you don't even seem to know what model it is? I suspect there is more to registering an old banger as a "classic" car than first appears. Why not just buy it and forget about classic car registration. I can't believe it will be worth the effort or save any money. A 1965 E-Type might be different. A 27 year old Citroen is going to be a liability not an appreciating Classic. A 1955 Citroen DS19 might be worth the effort.

On google i now think it may be a C3 bit not sure.
Sid, i think likely ordinary insurance be best but i still do not know how to buy and insure.

I have always wanted to drive either two or from Andalucia but not in a hurry.
If i bought this and spent a few quid it be fit for a run of 2k.
If it dies on route i just give away and get a flight, if i lose a few quid on the project i will
not be too worried though i be hoping it be successful.

Am i mad?

I think it is rated as classic as the present owner said road tax 50% of normal rate.
On reflection i do not think going for classic insurance be a good idea as likely be
restrictions and likely some explaining be done when being pulled out of a ditch
somewhere in France/UK.
What would normal insurance likely be on this?

Am I right that cars over 10 years old have to have the ITV test done twice yearly? Another expense to consider?
