Is it spelled the same for male/female.

It doesn't relate to the gender of the person you're addressing - it relates to the noun (el dia - the day) and that is a masculine noun which is why it is always buenos dias.

So that follows that the noun el noche & tarde are feminine nouns....hence Buenas Noches/Tardes

Yes, they are feminine nouns, so it is la noche (rather than el noche) and la tarde, and yes, hence it is Buenas Noches/Tardes.

Strange though that a word ending in A is masculine as normally nouns with an A ending are feminine and O masuline.
El Planeta is another masculine one and la mano is feminine.

Yes, there are quite a few of them. El sofá and el sistema are two others that always seem to me should be feminine, but they're not.

La barba is a weird one. Beard should be masculine, you'd think.

Ha ha! Actually, when I posted that, I did think to myself that - given the increase in whiskers on my own chin, as I age, maybe it's not so weird. My tweezers are my friend lol.
