Removing Artex from a ceiling
Anyone done this?
Is it possible to scrape the artex off or do you need to remove the plaster board and start again.
Thanks

Re: Removing Artex from a ceiling
Thanks. We had a leak and some sections have just fallen off, revealing the plasterboard above. I was wondering if they will be able to use a thin bladed scraper to prise the rest off. While we have the mess we intend to do the same in the adjacent room which was undamaged.

They will scrape off the high points (if its stipple type) and skim it smooth for you.

Ah... That's good. I thought they'd have to take the whole thing down

Re: Removing Artex from a ceiling
I just lost my post here ...
A tip I was given and it worked very well
Bladder the ceiling with the thickest solvite wallpaper past you can get to stick to the ceiling (real messy... Paint roller job in the end) ... then cover it with Cling Film ...(frustrating... very fiddly)
Leave it for a couple of days
Strip off the cling film and recoat the ceiling with a wetter version of the Paste
After a couple of hours attack it with a wide blade scraper and it comes off like cheese....thick gooey slimy cheese
Fill any gouges you make with the scraper with filler ...
...and repaint
jobs a good UN !

Re: Removing Artex from a ceiling
Remember that some Artex up until 1984 contains asbestos. The dust of this if inhaled is very dangerous to health, being the cause of thousands of early deaths through mesothelioma.
(Including my father-in-law)
The wallpaper paste option would help to keep dust down, but please be aware of the risks.

Re: Removing Artex from a ceiling
In my experience if some of the artex has cracked or fallen off it is best to remove the lot. It is a pain to plaster over and in any case this adds to the weight and is likely to start pulling artex from ceiling. Sad but unfortunately involves a lot of work. Don't forget to wear a mask and the asbestos issue needs careful consideration.

Re: Removing Artex from a ceiling
Thanks for all the tips.
I'm not doing this myself. It's an insurance job. The other room and hallway are not part of the insurance claim and we will ask the contractor to do those as an extra. If they won't, one of my neighbours is a plasterer and says he will do it.
The first thing the loss adjuster did was send off a sample. Apparently up to 2000 they were still using asbestos ( our house was built in 1999). There was no asbestos luckily.
I just wondered what was involved.

Re: Removing Artex from a ceiling
Artex'd ceilings are extemely popular within the decorating and renovation trade. If a ceiling is smooth, new owners want them textured; if textured, the incoming owners want them blinded out to smooth. And so it goes on, the room shrinking a little each time.

I haven't heard of anyone asking for a ceiling to be artexed for many years :-/

I think the reason all the houses on our development were artexed is because it is easier and quicker than flat.

...rather like the 'rustic' finish on cement-rendered walls. Quick, and covers a multitude of sins.
