Didn't they change a few years ago?
I think that the red ones were issued by the national social security department and were a dual social security/ health cards and the green ones, are just health cards issued by the Junta de Andalucia.
Both my wife and I have green cards and they cover us for our health needs.
Cheers

Re: how do you apply for residence in spain
I asked years ago in our local clinic what the difference was between the red and green cards (I wrongly thought the green ones were for pensioners). I was told that there's no difference - when they run out of red cards to print, they use green ones, or vice versa!
Could be a load of baloney - they're often a very unhelpful sarcastic bunch of wazzocks at that clinic

Don't worry about what people think, they don't do it very often

Thanks for that, and if I choose to become resident ??gerryh wrote:So you are a tourist/ holiday maker.Manchesteral wrote:... I live/spend a lot of time in Grand canaria but not resident.
You can't be in the Spanish health system as you aren't resident.
You will need to use your EHIC card, private medical insurance or pay cash.

You don't choose to become resident: if you stay for more than 183 days in a calendar year you are tax-resident, you just need to formalise the status!

Re: how do you apply for residence in spain
If you are over state pension age you apply for an S1 form from overseas healthcare in newcastle telling them you are leaving the uk to become a spanish resident. You use that to registar on the spanish health service after you have gained your residencia by signing up with everything else you need at a national police station.you cant get on the health system without being a offical resident first
