Hello alicia,

It depends on a number of things.

However, I am sure that you will be inundated woth responses from other forum members who have a far greater knowledge of this subject than me.

Good luck

Hi alicia,

Will depend what you get up to..............
Stay in Spain over 183 days in one year will make you Tax Resident.

The UK has various options too............Example

http://www.pwaccounts.co.uk/latest-news ... s-defined/

https://www.gov.uk/tax-foreign-income/residence

Have a search on the Web ..............see where your "Status" fits
All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.

How much easier for all concerned if the Hacienda issued a small pamphlet which was given to you when you got your NIE explaining all this. I have found that generally, unlike other topics, Tax has been the least discussed subject amongst ex pats. We all talked about getting our NIE, getting Residencia, buying and taxing cars, getting on the Padron etc, etc, but, mention tax and a lot of people just clam up or havnt got a clue. Its about time that the Spanish authorities issued a directive of do's and dont's and get a bit helpful for a change. The same questions get asked over and over again and it shouldnt be like that.

For 'normal' people If you are here for more than 183 days in a year then you are considered tax resident. Couldn't be much simpler could it?

In the UK the personal tax allowance is £11,500, so earn more than that and you pay tax.
Out of interest what is the personal tax allowance in Spain?

Have a look at http://www.spainaccountants.com/it.html
It's a lot less than in the UK.

That depends on age and income. For a UK state pensioner with no other income the allowance will be €12400 which is similar to the UK.

It's all in our forum FAQs

Thank you for everyone's kind contribution. In some ways it is straightforward. ie. More than 183 days a year in Spain then you are considered Tax Resident. But of course things are never that straightforward as we all know. If someone were to fall below both Spanish and UK tax thresholds where they are obliged to pay tax .....do they need to declare that or would that just be wasting people´s time. Both the authorities and the person concerned. Obviously if they above the thresholds I can understand the need to declare. Spanish bureaucracy not the easiest thing to navigate at the best of times. :?

They always say you should file a spanish income tax declaration the first year you are tax resident even if it says nill just to get you on the system so to speak.

The above answers all assume that people are properly registered, there are loads of people living under the radar !

If they are living under the radar, judgement day will arrive with Brexit when they will become illegal immigrants and liable for deportation - and about time too! Oh yes, and their untaxed un-ITVed UK registered cars will get crushed - hopefully!
