Olive - I think I tried the google route years ago, but it may be worth a try again now. I've never heard of reverse image - I will give that a go shortly :-)

Beni - I doubt it is a family crest - I don't think the landowners would want to be associated with the lower classes the houses were built for, just how much money they could get for the sale & subsequent freehold charge each year !

Chrissie,
Well that was just one suggestion....And it could be correct....

With regard to the houses built around the turn off the century , it would be most unlikely that they were owned by the occupants, most people during that period lived in rented houses, or tied houses belonging to companies, like mill owners, mining companies, railways etc. and private landlords, many who had huge amounts of rental property.
Anyway please let us know if you do find any information....
Regards,
Gordon.

Gasman, thanks for these :-) I did google when I was first researching, but it was quite a few years ago, and obviously there's a lot more out there now !

Having seen all these images (& quite a few more using Beni's suggestion of 'grotesques') I am fairly certain that it is a Green Man (but called by us 'His Nibs' !), but why he should be where he is, is anybody's guess at the moment..... I may try contacting historical societies in Manchester

Beni - yes, I knew that - I found that the land was leased by 'Edward Lloyd's Trustees' in 1902 to a builder, who in 1905 borrowed £1000 against the terrace of 7 houses. I have a record from a directory from 1906 which shows the house was occupied by a postal worker. I have maps covering the area, and a copy of the deeds dated 1957 but including a transcript of the original lease document, which gives a load of info about the transaction.

Chrissie,
I think that you are right about contacting local historical societies, they will be pleased to be able to record your plaque and I'm sure give you probably the best answers.
The internet always has plenty of info flowing , however much of it has been rehashed and plagiarized from one original source and sometimes loses the original factual content.
And my thoughts ..to date...it has been placed there in an obscure place to 'ward off evil spirits' , by the builder, brick manufacturer or owner etc., who was probably was a devout religious person.
You may be aware that in old houses often babies shoes and other talismans were placed in walls and roof voids etc. for good luck and because of religious beliefs.
Places of worship and public buildings throughout the world display 'grotesque' figures on their buildings, 'gargoyles '..evil looking creatures, etc, and I believe probably someones idea of what the 'devil' looks like..
Regards,
Gordon
